Shott, nee Alviza Skinner, was born at Birmingham, Iowa, on August 30, 1841, and died at the same place August 7, 1920, at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 8 days. She was the oldest child of Dow and Nancy Skinner, who were among the very first settlers in Van Buren county. She was the first white child born in the present Birmingham town limits. Shott Mrs. Samuel B. Shott, nee Alviza Skinner, was born at Birmingham, Iowa, on August 30, 1841, and died at the same place August 7, 1920, at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 8 days. She was the oldest child of Dow and Nancy Skinner, who were among the very first settlers in Van Buren county. She was the first white child born in the present Birmingham town limits. She joined the Methodist church in Birmingham _____?_____ that she _____?_____ with the Methodist church of which she remained a devoted member to the end. December 15, 1859, she was united in marriage to Samuel B. Shott. To this union were born nine children: Samuel B. Jr., Birmingham; Margaret, deceased in 1862; Chas. A., Ruby, Mont.; Austin D. and Frank B., Butte, Montana; William R., Birmingham; Anna E. Taylor, deceased June23, 1911; Vida R. Findlay, Birmingham; Martha Deceased Sept. 11, 1905. At her marriage she became the stepmother of Mary E. and Belle, the latter known as Mrs. Sloss of Seattle, Wash., now deceased. Among her immediate relatives she leaves to mourn her memory besides these children, three brothers and two sisters: E. H, Skinner, Cedar Rapids; Harry Skinner, Parkfield, Cal.; Ed C. Skinner, Bradshaw, Neb.; Mrs. Fred Huffman, Los Angeles, Cal.; Mrs. H. O. Byers, Fairfield. With her husband she gladly shared the sunshine and shadow of life. She bore with devotion and fortitude life’s vicissitudes. Her home was her palace and her family was her kingdom of which she was queen. She lived in the house into which he had led her at marriage all these years. Here he closed his eyes February 9, 1905, and here she has lived a life of a mother’s service and self sacrifice for 61 years. An injury sustained on October 3, 1919, made it impossible for her to walk about as formerly. Recovering from her injury somewhat and from last winter’s illness she moved around freely in her chair and was apparently in good health so that death at this time came entirely unexpected. She ate a hearty breakfast on Saturday morning, took her paper, began to read and fell asleep, the sleep from which there is no waking. She had slipped away very quietly to the eternal mansions. Her life of fortitude and devotion are her best and lasting monument in the hearts of all who knew her. Tho the messenger came unexpectedly he did not find her unprepared. “So when the iron portal shuts behind us, And life forgets us in its noise and whirl, Visions that shunned the glorious noonday find us And glimmering starlight shows the gates of pearl.”---Lowell. Services were held at the home on 2:00 on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. H. W. Munster. His text was I Thes. 4:14---“Them also that arte fallen asleep in Jesus will God bring with him.” She was laid to rest in the Maple Hill cemetery, where she now sleeps beside her husband and her daughters Margaret and Anna. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The sudden death of Mrs. S. B. Shott, one of the old settlers of this vicinity, occurred at her home here Saturday morning about 7 o’clock. Last November she she sustained a fall, and it is thought was a slight stroke of paralysis, and she had been practically helpless since that time, although she could help herself to some extent. Saturday morning she seemed to be unusually well and ate a hearty breakfast and died in her chair a short time afterwards. She would have been 79 years of age the 30th of this month.
