Description	:	SAMUEL B. SHOTT was born in Stark county, Ohio, May 4th, 1825, and died at his home in Birmingham, Feb. 9th, 1905, at 5:45. Deceased was married in Stark Co. to Isabel Croft in 1852. In November, 1854 he moved to Iowa and stopped in Fairfield until the following February when he moved to Birmingham and engaged at his trade of blacksmithing and the remainder of his life was spent here. SHOTT was born in Stark county, Ohio, May 4th, 1825, and died at his home in Birmingham, Feb. 9th, 1905, at 5:45. Deceased was married in Stark Co. to Isabel Croft in 1852. In November, 1854 he moved to Iowa and stopped in Fairfield until the following February when he moved to Birmingham and engaged at his trade of blacksmithing and the remainder of his life was spent here. In 1857 his wife died, leaving him with two daughters, Miss Mary and Mrs. Belle Sloss of Seattle, Wash. In December, 1859, he was again united in marriage with Miss Alviza Skinner, who, with five sons and five daughters, numerous grandchildren and two sisters survive to mourn his death. His daughters are Miss Mary of Birmingham, Mrs. Belle Sloss of Seattle, Wash., Anna E. Taylor, of Central, Iowa, Vida R. Findlay of Douds, Iowa, and Miss Mattie of Butte, Montana. The sons are S. Barney of Birmingham, Charley of Ruby, Montana, Austin, Frank and Will of Butte. In the summer of 1868, he formed a company known as Moss, Shott & Brown Wagon and Plow Manufacturing Co., and for many years conducted a large and flourishing business in a large building on the lots now occupied by the M. E. parsonage. The advent of railroads and the shipping in of eastern made goods caused a dissolution of the firm, and until the burning of the building and machinery in 1893 Mr. Shott carried on the business on a much smaller scale. For many years, until failing health caused him to relinquish it, he was one of the leaders of the Democracy of the county. A great reader, a man of wonderful memory, though never an office seeker, he stood high in the councils of his party, ans was always ready with an argument to defend its principles. For many years he served on the school board and as a member of the town council, and was always ready to do anything in his power to advance interests of the community. About ten years ago he began failing in health and soon after was compelled to relinquish business and has since been a great sufferer, though patient till the last. In the death of S. B. Shott the family has lost a kind and indulgent husband and father, the community an honorable and upright citizen. The funeral service was held at the home in Birmingham, Saturday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m., conducted by Rev. A. M. Smith of the M. E. church. Source: Van Buren Co.
