Mrs. Amy Ellison of Thorp died 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the Valley General Hospital. She had been ill for several months and confined to the hospital for 11 days. She would have been 85 years of age Thursday. Amy Childs was born August 7, 1867 in Allentown, Pennsylvania and moved with her parents Isaac and Mary Childs to Custer County, Nebraska, when she was eight years old. The family felt the urge to go West and in the spring of 1883 began the long trek by covered wagon train to the Kittitas Valley. They started the journey with three wagons drawn by four-horse teams but long before reaching their destination two of the wagons were lost and part of the trip had to be made on foot by members of the family. Toward the end of the journey, while walking ahead of the heavily-laden wagon, Amy and an older sister were trudging up the Wenas Hill and were overtaken by two wagons which had been driven to The Dalles for provisions. The girls climbed into the wagons beside the drivers. The driver with whom Amy rode was John Clemmons Ellison who had come to the Kittitas Valley in 1879 and who had filed a contest claim on a farm at Thorp. Thus she met the man whom she was to marry three months later on January 9, 1884. Their wedding was the first recorded in Kittitas County, which had just become a separate county. Her parents, who were in Pennsylvania and Virginia pioneer stock, returned to their home state of Nebraska shortly after the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Ellison settled on their homestead, known as the Ellison Ranch. The house sat on a hillside just beyond Thorp. Here Mrs. Ellison came as a bride and here she lived for nearly 70 years. Eight children were born to the couple, six of whom survive. They are John W. Ellison, Ellensburg; Rose Etta (Mrs. George Harvey), Thorp; Dora May (Mrs. Alfred Hilton), Central Point, Oregon; Alice Pearl (Mrs. George Brain), Thorp; Olive Myrtle (Hanlon), Thorp, and Mry Evadna (Petty) of San Francisco. Also surviving are a brother, Warren G. Childs, Spokane; 14 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. The Ellison were deeply interested in the social and civic development of the community and Mr. Ellison contributed to its progress and welfare. He financed and aided in building the First Christian Church of Thorp. For a period it was used a as a school and he served as elder of the church. His death occurred February 12 1898 and he is buried in Thorp Cemetery. Mrs. Ellison will be buried there beside her husband and an infant daughter. Mrs. Ellison was a lifelong member of the Christian Church and of the Rebekah Lodge for many years. She was a charter member of Wisteria Lodge of Thorp and last year was given her 50 year pin by that lodge. Funeral services will be held at the Honeycutt-Everson Chapel, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. David Vaughn of Thorp officiating. Ellensburg Daily Record, August 4, 1952 [Front Page]
