Backlund, old and respected pioneer settler of this community, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jonas Young, Sunday, June 13. He had arrived at the ripe old age of 84 years, 2 months and 25 days on the day of his death. Deceased had been in poor health for some time and was very feeble with the weight of his years so that his passing was not entirely unexpected but though expected the grief is nevertheless very hard to bear. A.E. Backlund was born on March 18, 1836, in Mayby, Njurunda socken, Sundsvall, Sweden. He came to this country in the year 1869 and settled in Illinois. A little later he moved to Marshalltown and in the year 1870 he moved to this locality where he has since resided. In the year 1871 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Caroline Blom and to them was born two children, Mrs. Jonas Young and Mrs. Nels Westrum, both of this locality. Death claimed the wife and mother three years ago. The two daughters together with sixteen grandchildren and a host of friends are left to mourn the passing of this old man. A half century is a long time to reside in one locality and during that long period the deceased saw many changes in the community. He was one of the early pioneer settlers of that day. He was one who helped to blaze the way for the succeeding generations that they might be able to better conquer the difficulties of the future. During the two years past he had been especially feeble and often longed and prayed that his departure to the Great Beyond would soon be given him. Funeral services were held Tuesday in charge of Rev. Bengston and interment made in Oakwood cemetery. NELS WESTRUM. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Swedish records show Anders Erik Andersson was born Feb. 29, 1836 and baptized March 2, 1836 in Njurunda, Västernorrland, Sweden, the son of Anders Andersson and Brita Stina Olofsdotter. In 1852, the pastor misrecorded his birth date in the household examination records as May 29, 1836. His older brother, Olof Petter Andersson Backlund was born on the 18th, which is probably where the discrepancy comes from. Records show he was married to Sigrid Olivia Bolin (born Oct. 19, 1847) on June 1, 1868 and together they emigrated to America on June 7, 1868. Her death date is unknown 1868-1871.
