Andrew Hengstler Sr., old and respected citizen of Creighton and community for the past forty six years passed away at his home on the south side last Saturday morning at 8:30 o'clock. The cause of Mr. Hengstler's demise was dropsy of heart of which affliction he had been a patient sufferer the past four months. Though everything possible was done for him by loving hands, the inroads of the disease were unable to be checked and coupled together with his advanced age, the disease finally overcame his once strong vitality and gathered him Home. Andrew Hengstler Sr. was born July 27, 1838 in Aldigen, Wittenberg, Germany and died February 23, 1918 at his home in Creighton at the age of 70 years and 7 months. In 1861 he came to the United States and worked in a mine for three years in the state of Michigan. Then upon receiving a message that his father was very ill, he returned for a six months stay in Germany. On his return to this country five men and twelve girls returned with him, among the number being his present wife and a number of his sisters and brothers. After living for a time in Cincinnati, Ohio, Mr. Hengstler, together with his future bride and his party came to Cottonwood Springs in Lincoln county, Nebraska, where on August 19, 1868, he was united in marriage to Miss Martha Zepf. To this union five children were born, all of which live in this community and together with his wife mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate father and husband. The children are Lena Bush, Andrew, John, William and Martha Hengstler. He is also survived by two brothers, John Hengstler, Nassett, N.Y.; Wm. Hengstler, Syracuse, N.Y. With his wife he occupied a farm in Saunders county from October 1868 until 1879, when he came to Knox county and filed on a homestead near Creighton and was one of the earliest pioneers of this section of the state. Mr. Hengstler Sr. faced all the hardships and privation of early pioneer life. His first dwelling was made of logs, but afterwards erected a frame dwelling, the lumber of which was hauled from Yankton, South Dakota, over 50 miles away. During the early eighties, grasshopper years were numerous and the losses, which he suffered were enough to chill the heart of many men, but Mr. Hengstler met and faced life's practical responsibilities as a true soldier of the time and it is to men of his character that we of the younger generations are today rich in the fruits of the untiring toil of our fathers. A man who braved the many trying experiences of early times and who by his own efforts attained a position of esteem and respect surpassed by none, needs little eulogy from any pen. What we say is eulogism is but a balm offering to sorrowing hearts. His life and dealings speak true words for him. The funeral was held from the home at 1 o'clock and from the German Lutheran church at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. John Keiser and many were the friends, who followed the remains to their last resting place in Creighton cemetery. The floral offerings were beautiful and many.
