Description	:	Annie Morton Smith was born in Loudoun, Ayr, Scotland on December 12, 1832. She was the daughter of George Smith and Janet Morton. Annie married James Rintoul on May 18, 1850 in Loudoun. The couple emigrated to Canada soon after their marriage. Records from the Dufferin Museum indicate that they departed from Glasgow and arrived in Quebec after a nine-week voyage. The couple first settled near Beverley Township, Wentworth. Their fourth child, Annie Morton Rintoul (m.Hammond) was born in 1856 in Amaranth, Ontario. The 1861 Ontario Census shows the family at Lot 21 Concession 3. They were among the first settlers in North Amaranth in Wenworth (now Dufferin). James and Annie had thirteen (13) children (all linked below). James died of smallpox in 1873 at the age of 46, leaving Annie with 10 children. Annie died of cancer at the age of 71 years. She is buried with her husband James as well as three of their sons, David, Archibald and Thomas who all died under the age of 5. Obituary: The Shelburne Economist, Oct 1, 1903: Death of Mrs. Rintoul Annie Morton Smith, relict of the late James Rintoul, died at her home, Lot 21, Con 3, Amaranth, Sunday last, aged 71 years. The funeral took place to Mono Centre cemetery yesterday (Wednesday). Deceased was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, where she was married , in 1851, to James Rintoul. Immediately afterwards they came to Canada, the ship they set sail in from Glasgow taking nine weeks to reach Quebec. At first they settled in Beverly township, Wentworth county, where they resided for three years where they resided for three years, when they removed to Amaranth settling in what was then a bush on Lot 21, Con 3. They were among the first settlers in north Amaranth. Mr. Rintoul died about 20 years ago. The surviving children are: James, of Gladstone, Man.; William, Robert, Alexander and David, of Black's Corners; Mrs. Joseph Kinsley, of Black's Corners, and Misses Jeanette and Bella, at home.
