Description	:	James Rintoul was born in Loudoun, Ayr, Scotland on April 23, 1827. He was the first son born to James Rintoul (1798-1869) and Annabella Wilson Gibson (1805-1837). James married Annie Morton Smith on May 18, 1850 in Loudoun. The couple emigrated to Canada soon after their marriage. Records from the Dufferin Museum indicate that they departed from Glasgow on a ship called "The Three Bells" and arrived in Quebec after a nine-week voyage. The 1901 Canada census indicates they arrived in 1850. They first settled near Beverley Township, Wentworth (which today is near Paris, Ontario) with James' uncle David Rintoul. Their first three children, James, Ellen (Helen) and William were born in Beverley, Wentworth. In December 1854, the young family moved to Amaranth where their fourth child, Annie Morton Rintoul (m.Hammond) was born in 1856. James and Annie had thirteen (13) children (10 survinving) all linked below. James died of smallpox in 1873 at the age of 46 years, leaving his wife alone with 10 children and the farm. He is buried with his wife Annie as well as three of their sons, David, Archibald and Thomas who all died under the age of 5.
