Parents and siblings were all born Prague, Czechoslovakia and came to America in 1885. ------------------ From The Gordon Journal, Wednesday July 13, 1955: Mrs. John Baker -- Anna Bertha Kohout, daughter of Joseph and Katherine Kohout was born in Sheridan county, Nebraska, on Oct 23, 1888 and died at her home in Gordon on July 5, 1955 at the age of 66 years, eight months and 12 days. She spent her childhood near Rushville, Nebr. It was in this vicinity too that she grew to womanhood. On Nov 19, 1907, she was united in marriage to John W. Baker. To this union were born six children. One child, Robert, died in infancy. The early years of her married life were spent on a farm northwest of Gordon and in June 1920, the family moved to town. She was received on confession of faith into full membership in the Presbyterian church of Gordon, Oct 3, 1926. She was a faithful wife, a loving mother and a kind friend and neighbor. In September, 1942, Mrs. Baker and her sister, Mrs. Mary Swick visited relatives on the west coast. It was while at the home of her daughter Mildred that she was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage. After this affliction she never fully regained her health. Her favorite pastime was writing letters to her relatives and many friends. She also enjoyed listening t the radio. It was in this manner that she began writing to her favorite entertainers and to shut-ins like herself. She enjoyed this hobby until her death. Surviving Mrs. Baker are her husband; her children, Mrs. Harold E. Thompson (Evelyn); Albert Ray, Lapawai, Ida, Mrs. Charles M. Wickwire (Mildred) Eureka, Calif; Ira James M. Sgt US army, Fort Hood, Tex, Mrs. Robert B. Abbott (Lois), Upton , Wyo, and grandchildren, Eugene Clark, airman third class at Yask air force base, Yaak, Mont; Jane Diane Thompson; Joyce May Wickwire, Donald and Elsa Baker; and Ronald, Marilyn and Clifford Abbott. She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Mary Swick of Clinton, Nebr; a brother, Frank Kohout of Olympia, Wash, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Pallbearers were B. D. Berkheimer, Claude Saults, Jean Jenkins, Dwight McCune, Roger Reeves and R. F. Nelson.
