Read More	December 14, 1911 - Carroll Sentinel - Again death has taken tribute, from among Carroll county pioneers. Before his relentless sickle lives are yielded up like sheaves of ripened grain. Mrs. Philip Lenz of this locality, who for a period of almost two months was ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.J. Nurre, at Neola, Iowa, is the latest to receive the message calling her to realms of eternal peace. She had gone to Neola early in the fall to visit her daughter aforesaid, hoping to be strong enough to later accompany Mrs. Nurre and children to Merrill, to visit another daughter, Mrs. V.H. Wahl. Her health had been precarious during the past year, an ailment of the heart, coupled with stomach trouble, produced complications that rendered her bedfast and grew so serious as to call all her children to her bedside several weeks ago. Local physicians and a Council Bluffs specialist, aided by a professional nurse and the loving care of relatives, for a while seemed to have arrested the progress of the aliments and she was able to be about a little. But Friday, November 8th, there was a recurrence of the alarming symptoms arid within a few hours the complications resulted fatally at 4:40 Friday afternoon. The remains arrived here Saturday evening over the Great Western Railway and were taken to the old home where relatives and friends gathered for a pathetic farewell to departed. The funeral was conducted Monday morning from SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic church, Father Kuemper celebrating Requiem High Mass for the repose of her soul, after which a large following of friends attended interment at the Catholic cemetery. Anna Laisen was born at Wiersdorf, Rogiernugsbezirk Trier, Rhenish Prussia, Germany, April 20, 1845. She was therefore 66 years, eight months and 18 days old at the time of her death. She came to America at the age of 19, and on July 2nd, 1866, was married to Philip Lenz at Mendota, Illinois. They resided near there until coming to Carroll in the spring of 1878. For over 33 years they resided on the farm near this city, and they shared with so many other pioneers the struggles of early years that shattered the health of strong men and of the trials whereof few of the younger generation have any conception. The husband, with whom for over 45 years departed shared life's joys and sorrows, survives her with eight of their nine chlldren, one son dying in infancy many years ago. The following are the surviving children: Mary; Mrs. W.H. Wahl, Merrill, Iowa; Kate, Mrs. Jno. O'Brien, Maple River, Iowa; Henry Lenz, Coon Rapids, Iowa; Jno. Lenz, Carroll, Iowa; P.V. Lenz, Kimball, South Dakota; Miss Lucy Lenz, Carroll, Iowa; Anna, Mrs. J.J. Nurre, aforesaid, Neola, Iowa; and M.J. Lenz, Carroll, Iowa. They were all present at the funeral, as were also the following from a distance: P.G. Lenz, Danbury, Iowa; Mrs. Joe Rosauer Danbury, Iowa; Nick Shilling, Manning, Iowa. Life to this good, truly Christian mother was fraught with its sacred duties to God, husband, children and others in sorrow, misery and sadness. Her greatest joy was to be able to attend the celebration of the sacred mysteries on the Lord's holy altar and there she carried life's burdens and gained strength for future trials. The "peace which passeth all understandings" came as richest blessing from Him in Whom she put her abiding reliance. She faced death with the same trusting assurance that had sustained, her in earthly tribulation. Her last days were spent in that happy state where the soul, tho still united with the body, seems to float out on clouds etherlal to space untranched by the sorbid breath of earth. Thus we hope, pray and believe, that but a cloud has overshadowed her; that tho we must patiently wait, with "thou shalt follow me afterwards," was life's hope and grinding star, we shall meet again soon. She was so dear to us that it seems life without her shall be impossible, has gone to a home where joy is eternal and where faith tells us her voice may still plead our cause and heal our wounds. God in His intent that we shall live on until our time comes, also gives us consoling assurance that we may still be united with our loved ones tho their mortal forms have been placed in sacred earth. And while we ask our friends to pray for the dead, "that they may be leased from their sins," we also ask these faithful departed for their intercession that we too may be found worthy to join them in "everlasting dwellings."
