ANNIE SOMERS DIED IN HOSPITAL HAD LIMB AMPUTATED ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO After she had fought a good fight for life, following an operation about two weeks ago when one of her limbs was amputated, Mrs. Annie R. Somers died in the McCready Hospital here Thursday morning. She was 87 years of age. Mrs. Somers had an infection of her foot, which did not respond to treatment, and it was necessary to amputate her limb. Apparently, she stood the shock of the operation well, and was on the road to recovery, when she had a relapse and death came. Born in Caroline county Dec. 4th, 1866, she was the daughter of the late Richard H. and Marietta Loockerman, and the wife of Benjamin F. Somers, who at the age of 95 years survives her. She came to Crisfield about 1871. Mrs. Somers was a woman of much talent and commanding presence. She had been particularly active in church and lodge and temperance work. A forceful speaker, she had traveled over the Eastern Shore in spreading the gospel of temperance as a member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. She was a charter member of Mt. Pleasant Methodist church and of Chesapeake Chapter No. 28, Order of the Eastern Star, took part in their activities until very recently, and had for years been one of the leaders for civic betterment in the community. Mrs. Somers was noted as an elocutionist, and her recitals of poetry and prose had gained for her wide commendation. For many years at meetings of importance in the community she was called on to recite and did so in a manner that was admired and applauded. It is said that she spoke before three Presidents of the United States, Wilson, Coolidge and Hoover. She was very proud of her hats, which at all times were striking in appearance, and it could well be said that this was one hobby she thoroughly enjoyed. A woman of many splendid accomplishments, she had the regard and esteem of a wide circle of friends. She is resting at the Covington Funeral Home, where friends may call, until Sunday, when funeral services will be held in Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m., conducted by the pastor, Rev A. T. McFarland. Interment will be in Sunnyridge Memorial Park. Mrs. Somers is survived by her husband, five sons, William Nevelle Somers of Chicago, Ill., John Dewey Somers of River Forest, Ill., and George M.
