Read More	Stratford Courier July 5, 1923 Maria Annette, daughter of Nelson Bliss and Lydia Cleveland, was born at Waupun, Wisconsin, November 20, 1852, and passed away at 10:45 on Saturday evening, June 30, 1923, having arrived at the age of 70 years, 7 months, 10 days. At the age of fourteen years she came with her people to Iowa where they settled on the present homestead south of what was then called Hook's Point; the present town of Stratford having since been built. As a little child she dedicated her life to a conscientious and consistent life in His service. On January 1, 1872, fifty-one years ago, she was united in marriage to David Brainard Hakes in the same house in which she died. Her husband died five years ago. To them were born four children, all of whom were present at the time of her death. They are: Carlton J., of Spencer, Iowa; Mrs. Frank E. Lundell, D.B. Hakes, Jr., known to all his friends as "Tom", and Mrs. Elmer M. Olofson, all of Stratford. There are also surviving here four grandchildren: Ralph Hakes of Spencer; Lloyd and Inez Hakes and Mrs. Martin Gabrielson, all of Stratford. Her's was a home to which her friends loved to come and to which her children always knew their friends would be welcomed. She was always looking for good in people and had such a large capability for enjoyment out of opportunities coming to her. What greater tribute could be paid than by a daughter who said: "I have not only now, but in the time past tried to think of one thing Mother has done which she ought not, and I do not know one." She will be missed in so many ways by her immediate family, her other relatives and a wide circle of friends whose comfort will be that their loss is her gain for we know that she has found peace through Jesus Christ as her Savior. She has particularly enjoyed her membership in Avon Chapter of Order of Eastern Star whose members showed their love for her Tuesday at the beautiful service at the grave. She has also been a member of the Brotherhood of American Yeomen whom she served for twenty-four years as their faithful correspondent. At almost the last day of her life she expressed her perfect faith by saying: "Through His righteousness we are saved. God knows all," and by these lines which she had written in her Bible: How blessed it is to be old, And to sit near the sunset gates, Ready to enter the portals But willing with patience to wait. Knowing that safely garnered Are all the sheaves of the years, And behind all the struggles and tears. The burial services was held from the M.E. church Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock following a short prayer service at the home conducted by Rev. Carl Hammer. The service at the grave was in charge of the local chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and with their beautiful and impressive service the remains were lowered into their last resting place in Oakwood Cemetery. Card of Thanks We wish to take this opportunity to publicly express our gratitude and appreciation of the great kindness and sympathy shown us by our esteemed neighbors and friends by their acts of thoughtfulness and gifts of beautiful flowers during the illness and death of our beloved mother. HER CHILDREN The Jewell Record July 5, 1923 PIONEER RESIDENT PASSES Among those who attended the funeral of Mrs. Nettie Hakes at Stratford Tuesday afternoon were, Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Wilson and Mrs. W.B. Kepler. Mrs. Hakes was a well known pioneer resident of the southern part of the county, residing the past years at Stratford. She passed away at her home Saturday night at 10:40 after a month's critical illness. Her husband preceded her in death five years ago. She leaves four children - two sons and two daughters, besides several grandchildren. The funeral was held at 2:00 o'clock in the Methodist church at Stratford, and interment made at the Oakwood cemetery.
