Hakes was born near DeRuyter, New York on October 25, 1847, and died at the Eleanor Moore hospital at Boone, May 20, 1918 aged 70 years, 6 months, 25 days. When about eighteen years of age he came to Iowa and for several years was employed on a farm near the inland village of Hook's Point. On January 1, 1872, he was united in marriage to Miss Nettie Cleveland and to this union four children were born. They are: Carl J. Hakes of Norfolk, Nebraska; Mrs. F.E. Lundell of Boone, Thomas Hakes of Stratford and Mrs. E.M. Olofson of east of Stratford. He leaves to mourn his untimely passing his sorrowing wife, two saddened daughters and two sons, one brother, H.P. Hakes of Westerly, R.I.; two sisters, Mrs. J.S. Evans of Kalispell, Montana and Mr. Harr Edgerton of Oroville, Montana, four grandchildren and a host of friends in and around Stratford. He was for many years a prominent farmer and dairyman. And up to the time of his last illness was active in doing his share of the work on the farm. Early in life he left the home fireside in the east and came west to carve out his fortune. All he had gained in this world was gained by hard labor and yet he was always pleasant to all his acquaintances and never failed to pass the time of day in his jolly way. There is hardly a small child in Stratford who was not known to "Brain" as he was familiarly known, and every one of them will miss him. Kind at heart and always jolly he won one's friendship and always remained your friend. His convictions, whether right or wrong, were honest and sincere, and in his dealing with mankind he was honest and square. Always active and strong he gave liberally of his time, labor and sympathy in homes of sickness and death. He will be sadly missed in this community where he was so well known and had lived for so many years. The funeral services were held from the home Thursday afternoon at 1:30 and from the M.E. church at 2 o'clock, Rev. Pharo officiating. The remains were laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery.
