Bryan Company, publishers Annie Hudgens Dunlap "Grandmother Dunlap" was born 10/5/1874 on her parents' farm between Madden's Station and the Princeton Road, the fourth of seven children of James and Ella Wharton Hudgens. She had twelve children and eleven survived to adulthood. At 45 yrs. old, she became a widow. She took her children and went to the farm where she began her dual role as mother and supervisor of the huge operation. Despite the problems of the depression, Annie found the time to serve her county and state. Since 1909, she had been active in the DAR and was also a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was chairman of the Red Cross in 1932, and at one time was religious and welfare chairman of the South Carolina Council of Farm Women. She learned to drive her Model A Ford and became a traveling Farm Home Demonstration agent. Her motto: "We have our mountain-top experiences and we would like to stay there. But when we come down to the level of real life we are confronted with a duty - service to those who need our help. Our response to those needs will determine whether or not we are living a beautiful and dutiful life." R. T. Dunlap, Jr., often told his children that his grandmother taught him to go do something for others when you yourself are feeling badly - then you'll feel better. In May 1944, Annie Hudgens Dunlap was selected as "South Carolina Mother of the Year", and presented with a State Mother Certificate by Governor Olin D. Johnston in an official ceremony on Mother's Day at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She lived 11 more years after the honor until she suffered a heart condition and then an arthritic condition that severly handicapped her. Fire burned her home and totally destroyed it on New Year's Day, 1954. On June 14, 1954, officers of the Women of the Church bestowed on her an Honorary Life Membership, the first such honor given in the history of the Mountville Presbyterian Church. It was in recognition for her service as teacher, pianist and church leader for over 30 years. On March 3, 1955, her suffering ended and she was buried in the family plot in Laurens Cemetery. She was called "Sweetie" from her childhood.
