Mr. Loftus came to America when nine years of age with his parents, locating in Pennsylvania. When seventeen years of age he took up steam boating on the Great Lakes, he followed this calling for a number of years, later taking up railroading, and it was while thus engaged that he came to Kansas, and worked for the M.K. and T. Railway with headquarters at Junction City. While located at this place he came to Jamestown, in the fall of 1870, and homesteaded a quarter section of land just adjoining Jamestown on the south, and returned to Junction City. A few months later he moved his family here and bouught the quarter where Mr. Loftus now lives. In 1872 he built the most commodious house in the vicinity at that time, hauling the material from Junction City. This house is perhaps one of the most historical houses in this section of the country--during the early settlement of Jamestown it was used as "town hall" for the entire community and also as a church and school house. This house has stood for 52 years and is good for many more. Mr. Loftus was married to Elmira McQuire in New York. To this union three children were born, two sons and one daughter, the daughter died at seventeen years of age. The sons, Thomas Edward and Michael, survive him. Mrs. Loftus died in 1890. Thus marks to passing of another pioneer, one who blazed the trail of yesterday for the people of today--one who knew what it was to face the perils of the homesteader in the early days of Kansas. Funeral services were held at the St. Mary's Church Saturday morning at ten o'clock; conducted by Rev. Father Hennessee. Interment was made in the St. Mary's cemetery.
