She was the youngest child of Jacob Getman Trumbauer (1824-1895) and his wife Mary A. Hofford (1822-1891). Jacob was originally from Milford Township, Bucks County. The couple married in 1844 and had five children: Amanda (1845-1923), Susanna (1847-1862), Mary Ellen (1850-1860), Reuben Franklin (1851-1860), and Aravesta (1853-1931). She was the youngest child of Jacob Getman Trumbauer (1824-1895) and his wife Mary A. Hofford (1822-1891). Jacob was originally from Milford Township, Bucks County. The couple married in 1844 and had five children: Amanda (1845-1923), Susanna (1847-1862), Mary Ellen (1850-1860), Reuben Franklin (1851-1860), and Aravesta (1853-1931). The small pox epidemic that spread through Pennsylvania in 1860-61 almost certainly took the lives of Reuben, Mary Ellen and Susanna. This must have devastated the family and it may explain why Aravesta remained so close to her remaining sister Amanda. Aravesta’s father was a jack-of-all-trades. In 185os the family lived in Salsburg (now Salisbury Township), Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Jacob was working as stone carver. A decade later they reside in Hanover (now West Bethlehem) and Jacob is a master blacksmith. In addition to their family two borders-- Jeremiah Schwartz (a blacksmith) and Daniel Beohm (a wagoner)—are living with them. The family was still living in Hanover in 1870. Jacob is a millwright. Their daughters Amanda (24 years old) and Aravesta (16) live at home. For reasons we’ll never know Jacob and Mary move to St. Louis, Missouri, shortly after their daughters marry in the late 1870s. She met and married Edgar Henry Summerfield Bailey (1848-1933) sometime shortly after he arrived in Bethlehem, PA to teach chemistry at Lehigh. They were married in the July heat about a year and a half after his appointment started. The Trumbauer family had deep roots in the area. The family came to America from the Rhenish Palatinate before 1733 and settled in Quakertown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Vessie grew up in Bethlehem with her sisters Amanda, Susanna, and Mary Ellen and her brother, Reuben Franklin. Their wedding was announced in the local paper (13 July, 1876): “This morning at 9 o’clock, quite a choice little gathering of invited guests, to the number of 25 or 30, assembled at the house of Mr. Jacob Trumbauer, West Bethlehem, to witness the marriage of his daughter Vessie to Mr. E.H.S. Bailey, an instructor at the Lehigh University. The occasion was a very happy one to all participants, the rich repast after the ceremony being especially enjoyable. The happy couple left with the noon train for New York, thence to proceed by boat to Boston, and thence to the home of Mr. Bailey in Connecticut. The best wishes of their many friends follow them on their wedding tour as well as in life’s entire journey. Church records indicate the ceremony was witnessed by “Mr. and Mrs. Trumbauer and many friends.” After the birth of their second child, the couple moved to Lawrence, Kansas where her husband Dr. EHS Bailey took a position in what would become the chemistry department at KU.
