Read More	MERRYMAN, ARCHIE WALKER—Archie Walker Merryman was born to James Orrick and Blanche (Walker) Merryman January 12, 1904, on his grandfather’s homestead one mile west of Martland. He passed away at the Long Term Care at the Fillmore county Hospital in Geneva on March 13, 1994, at the age of 90 years, 2 months and 1 day. He was the oldest of five boys in the family. Archie lived his entire life in the Martland and Shickley communities. He spent the last five months of his life in Heritage and Long Term Care. He attended grade school in Martland and one year of high school at Shickley. Archie developed an interest in machinery as he assisted his father in farming. In the early 1930’s he and his brother, Maynard, ran the neighborhood threshing machine, doing shock and stack threshing. They also plowed snow on the highways and graded roads in Stanton township. As a young man he went to work for J.B. Alfs in making the first well drilling machine for irrigation wells in Fillmore county. He helped drill wells in the navy Depot near Hastings and on other government property during World War II. He helped drill the first irrigation wells around Shickley. Later he worked for Ed Steider Implement Company in Shickley, setting up new machinery and as a repairman and mechanic. Archie never married, but lived at his parents’ home all his life. After the death of his parents, he remained living in the house until November 1993, when he entered Heritage due to poor health. He was a quiet man who never talked much. He was a good uncle to his nieces and nephews, always interested in their accomplishments. One of his favorite pastimes was driving in the country looking at the crops. Archie was preceded in death by his parents, James and Blanche; three brothers, Leroy, Maynard and Jess. He is survived by one brother, Morris and wife, Naomi; three sisters-in-law, Caroline Merryman, Ruby Eppler and Lucy Merryman; six nieces, four nephews and several grand nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted from the Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva on Wednesday, March 16, with the Rev. Teyrl Otto officiating. Stanley Johnson provided organ music before and after the service and Karl K. Brinkman played the guitar and sang,” Amazing Grace” and “The Old Rugged Cross.” Pallbearers were Perry Schweitzer, Don Saltzman, Doug, Jim and Don Merryman and Bernard Miller.
