Read More	MERRYMAN, MAYNARD JAY—Maynard Jay Merryman was born to James Orrick Merryman and Blanche Iva Walker Merryman on April 7, 199, on his grandfather’s homestead near Martland, and passed away December 5, 1993, at the Lincoln General Hospital in Lincoln at the age of 82 years, 7 months and 28 days. He was one of five children in the family. His entire life was spent in the Martland and Shickley communities. He attended Martland School through the 10th grade, and graduated from Shickley high School with the Class of 1928. His class especially enjoyed the alumni get togethers and in 1993, eight couples of the class of 1928 were present for their 65th reunion. After high school, Maynard took an extension class in radio work and repair, and became the local radio repairman. He also whittled propellers that were fastened to a motor to charge up the 6 volt battery to power the radio. He invented a burner for heaters that would burn oil, which was cheaper than coal since wood was so scarce. An oil burner was installed in the church at Martland and could be lit on Saturday evening, so the church would be warm on Sunday morning. When Maynard started farming for himself, he purchased a Ford tractor and made over the horse drawn machinery to fit the tractor hitch. Later, irrigation well was put down and the irrigation progressed from the ditch with siphon tubes to a pivot. Maynard was married to Lucy E. Fisher at York, on May 22, 1935, and to them two children were born. They joined the United Brethren Church in Martland in 1935. They were involved in Sunday school, youth programs and in helping student pastors who preached at Martland and attended York College. They later joined the United Methodist Church in Shickley when the Evangelical merged into the E.U.B. Maynard served on the school board of district No. 59 for many years, and served on the township board for over 40 years. He served the A.S.C.S. office in Fillmore county from 1932-1973, serving as crop measurer, grain sealer and county committeeman. He retired from farming in 1978, when his grandson took over the operation, but he kept his interest in farming and marketing. He was a good father and husband and was a kind and gentle man, always ready to lend a helping hand. Maynard was preceded in death by his parents, James and Blanche Merryman and two brothers, LeRoy and Jess. He is survived by his wife Lucy; daughter, Joan (Bernard) Miller; son, Don (Edith); four grandchildren, James (Lynnelle) Miller, Beth (Robert) Webb, Jeffrey Merryman and Jennifer Merryman; four great-grandchildren, Jameson Miller, Austin Spurling, Patrick Webb and Andrew Webb; two brothers, Archie, and Morris and wife Naomi; and by two sisters-in-law, Caroline Merryman and Ruby Eppler. Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church in Shickley on Wednesday, December 8, with the Rev. Teyrl Otto officiating. Stanley Johnson accompanied the congregation who sang “God Will Take Care of You” and a quartet of Mr. and Mrs. Don Kempf, Dave Kempf and Marge Swartzendruber sang “Because he Lives” and “My God and I.” Casket bearers were Jim Miller, bob Webb, Jeff, Glen, Ray and James Merryman.
