Description	:	James O. Merryman Jr., son of James O. and Jennie Mills Merryman, was born March 5, 1875, on his father’s homestead one mile west of Martland. He lived on this same farm until 1941, when he moved one and one-half miles south of Martland to operate a service station. Merryman Jr., son of James O. and Jennie Mills Merryman, was born March 5, 1875, on his father’s homestead one mile west of Martland. He lived on this same farm until 1941, when he moved one and one-half miles south of Martland to operate a service station. He passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack Tuesday; April 6, 1954, at the age of 79 years, 1 months and 1 day. As an early pioneer, he helped to build this part of the country. As a boy he herded cattle on the open range in Fillmore County and carried water to the workers building the North Western Railroad through Martland. He was a farmer most of his life. Mr. Merryman was married to Blanche Walker May 6, 1903, and they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last spring. Five sons were born to this family, Archie, Morris, LeRoy, Maynard and Jesse. He was preceded in death by his sister Mate, January 28, 1913, and his son LeRoy October 31, 1951. Surviving to honor his memory are his wife and four sons; four daughters-in-law; ten grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Grant Bail; a brother, Ray Merryman and family. Funeral services were held from the Hrubesky-Farmer funeral home in Geneva Friday, April 9, at 2 o’clock, Rev. E. W. Price of Shickley Methodist Church and Rev. Fred Reeb of Salem Mennonite Church conducted the services. A male quartet composed of Wayne Kempf, Henry Lauber, Roy Troyer and Glen Roth sang, “The Many Mansions, “That Beautiful Land,” and “Good Night and Good Morning.” The profusion of beautiful flowers bore mute testimony to the esteem in which the deceased was held, and the full to over-flowing attendance at the funeral home attested to the fact that his friends were numbered only by his acquaintances, and also proved the application of the poem read by his pastor that “he lived in the house by the side of the road and was a friend to man.” Casket bearers were M. J. Eichelberger, Elmer Lauber, Gus Sackschewsky, Henry Saltzman, Loring Thoman and J. J. Van Waning. The Nebraska Signal April 15th, 1954 page 13.
