Eppler. ------------------------ MERRYMAN, LESTER LEROY LEROY--LeRoy Merryman was born on a farm one mile west of Martland, Neb., November 16, 1908. He departed this life on the evening of October 31, 1951. He lived his entire life in the Martland community, having attended grade school at Martland and high school at Shickley. Soon after graduation he enrolled in the Lincoln School of Commerce. However, e realized his talents were along agricultural lines, and then began his career as a farmer. November 13, 1929, he was united in marriage to Ruby Louise Heironymus. Together they began farming about one-half mile north of their present home. As LeRoy enlarged his farming operations, eh moved his family to his grandfather Merryman’s homestead, vacated by his parents. Later he bought this place and with much planning and hard work by him and his devoted wife, they rebuilt and modernized it into a lovely farm home, his one thought being the comfort and welfare of his family. LeRoy was active and interested in community affairs, as well as 4-H work. He served faithfully and conscientiously on local school and church boards. His 4-H club work, in which he sincerely believed, gave him a wide circle of friends. He had a strong, quiet religious belief throughout his entire life. This belief found part of its outward expression when he and his wife joined the Martland church soon after their marriage. He worked in and for the church, serving for a period of time in the capacity of a class teacher and Sunday school superintendent. When the Martland church closed, the family transferred their membership to the Methodist Church of Shickley. He leaves to mourn his untimely passing his widow, Ruby, and three children, Karen, Janis and Jimmy; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Merryman; four brothers, Archie, Morris, and Maynard of Shickley, and Jess of Little Rock, Ark. To know him long was to love him well. There was no selfishness, only a kind regard and consideration for those about him. He especially loved his wife and children, and always placed their interests first in providing for their needs and happiness. He believed in Jesus, what Jesus taught, and what Jesus has promised. Even more, he believed in doing what the Master has asked us to do. He lived, therefore a full life though to us, it seems incomplete. Funeral services were held at the Shickley Methodist Church Sunday afternoon, November 4, with the pastor, Rev. Grier Hunt, in charge, who used the 23rd Psalm as the basis of his remarks. Mrs. J. A. Fischer presided at the organ, giving a long prelude wile the large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends were assembling. The seating capacity of the church was taxed to the limit, both on the main floor and the basement. A speaking system made the entire service wholly audible to those in the basement. The quartet furnishing the vocal music was composed of Mrs. Verlie Zetterman, Mrs. Keith Semke, Arthur Venell and dick Rosenquist, the selections being, “Sometime We’ll Understand,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” with “God Be with You” being sung at the grave. The many persons in attendance and the large display of beautiful flowers bore tangible evidence of the esteem in which LeRoy was held by the community. Casket bearers were Arthur Ekwall, Don Flory, Merritt Hedden, Francis Kimbrough, Gus Sackschewshy and Isaac Schelkopf. Interment was in the Geneva Cemetery.
