Arlene Margaret (Lauer) Gulsvig Granby, the daughter of Peter and Hulda (Trapp)Lauer, was born February 3,1927, in Fayette Co near Eldorado, Iowa. She passed away Thursday, october 24, 2002, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. She had reached the age of 75 years, 8 months and 21 days. She was baptized in St Peter Lutheran Church at Eldorado and confirmed there on March 17,1940. Arlene attended elementary school and graduated from 8th grade in the Fayette Co Country school system. Due to her mother's illness, Arlene had to put her eduction on hold, during which time her father encouraged her to pursue her musical eduction. Arlene dedicated her time helping with the care of her mother and other family responsibilities. On June 15, 1946 Arelen was married to Almar Emil Lewis Gulsvig in the Stavanger Evangelical Lutheran church at Ossian, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Gene and Linda. They lived in the Gunder and Postville area until the death of her husband Almar who died April 4,1963. The family then moved to Waverly, where Arlene worked at various jobs, including the bakery and the Bremwood Children's Home. She was married to Bennette Granby and they lived in Ames and Oelwein, then moved to the Albert Lea, Mn area, where Bennette passed away in 1981. Through her connection with the Glenville Church, she met her special friend, Harold Schell. Hold remained in her life to share her love of dancing, music, fishing and travel until his death in the fall of 1995. In 1996 Arlene moved to West Union, Iowa to be closer to her grandchildren. When her health began to fail in January, she moved to Postville to be with her daughter. On February 2,2000 she became a resident of Good Samaritan Center, where she shared her love of music by playing the piano for her friends and the staff. Arlene had a great love for her family, music and animals. She especially loved her dog, Baby Face. She was a talented musician and could play almost any instrument, including clarinet, accordion, and piano and had given piano lessons as well. She Crocheted and knitted and taught many young people in the skill of needle work. Arlene had worked at Gordanier Cleaners in Postville. Through the years, she also worked in many home as a home health care provider. She was a member of Glenville Lutheran Church and the Women of the church of Glenview, Mn. she played the organ there for several years. Arlene is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Almar and Bennette, and a special friend, Harold Schell, and two brothers, Ralph and Clair Lauer. Serving are her children, Gene Gulsvig of Forest City, Iowa and Linda and her husband Gerry Lovell of Postville: two grandchildren, one great grandchild, one brother Leslie R (Frances) Lauer, Nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
