Mr. Hattan had gone to that place on February 11 to visit and appeared to be in apparent good health. On February 19th he suffered a paralytic stroke from which he never regained consciousness. He had lived in and around Edgar for the past year coming here from Pittsburg, Kansas. The weaver's shuttle as the real miner's train going to and from weaves a fabric in human life. At times the exuberance of youth or necessity made it imperative that the finished garment be made ready much sooner than is sometimes expected. At the close of day the call is made and we are called to behold the pattern woven. The Eternal Architect's approval must be the final decision. Arthur Harrison, son of Mark and Victoria (Short) Hattan, was born May 7th, 1876, and closed the epoch of human life February 23rd, 1928, having rounded out the span of ** 51 years, 9 months and 1 day, Bell* Plain, Marshall County, Illinois, was the place of his birth and at the age of nine years his parents were drawn by the urge of the west and settled in Nebraska where Arthur grew to young manhood. The country school afforded the only educational privileges that Arthur accepted. The early days of Nebraska held many privations and disappointments for its citizens and when the excessive drouth of 1893 and 1894 caused not a few to suffer, Arthur with an uncle went to southeastern Kansas where he found labor as an engineer for a coal company. His work took him to Pittsburg, Weir City and Independence. The last named city was his residence when the call came that took him to the other side of the river of life to report for duty. The call of fraternity presented itself to Arthur and he became a member of I.O.O.F. He was a loyal member and in his hours of illness it was his strength. Arthur retired from active work about a year ago and a very short time ago he visited his brothers and sisters and apparently made ready to go out into the unseen. His father passed on seven years ago and his mother a little more than a year ago and now Arthur has joined that group in eternity. Four sisters and two brothers remain to mourn. They are Mrs. Ina Graham, Mrs. Cora Powell, Sanford C., Etta and Earnest of Edgar, Nebraska and Mrs. Edna Moss of Geneva, Nebraska. Arthur was of a family of pioneers who did much for the development of the west and while he did the humble task of driving the engine that pulled the train of coal cars at the mine, he was faithful to that trust and did it well. Ours may be a humble task but may those dependent upon us find us faithful to the task of contributing our bit to the happiness of our brothers. Funeral services were held from the home of his sister, Mrs. B. A. Powell, southeast of Edgar, conducted by Rev Sanborn of Clay Center, Nebraska. Interment was made in the Edgar Cemetery.
