Description	:	In 1879 August Schwichtenberg, at the age of eleven years, came with his parents and six brothers and sisters from Pommern, Germany and settled in Wisconsin. Read More	In 1879 August Schwichtenberg, at the age of eleven years, came with his parents and six brothers and sisters from Pommern, Germany and settled in Wisconsin. In the spring of 1880 they joined a wagon train consisting of thirty-five wagons drawn by oxen and for forty-nine days traveled west across the prairies, until they came to South Shore, north of Watertown. They remained there for two years but were flooded out each year, but Mr. Schwichtenberg, being a mason, obtained work for himself and his two older boys during that time. In 1881 he and four other men took some of the boys, five wagons, some plows and tools and headed west again. They crossed the James River at Belcher's Ford, in Fisher Grove, and took adjoining homesteads a mile or so west of Crandon. No surveys had been made, and there were no roads on the prairies, only trails, grass and buffalo bones. The men gathered the bones and stacked them in piles as high as straw piles. Later, the bones were taken to Crandon and hauled away in gondola cars. That summer the men broke sod and made sod shanties for each of the claims. Late in September the five men returned to SOuth SHore and stayed the winter. In the spring of 1882 they started west again but this time they took their entire families with them, and settled on their homesteads. In 1883, August's father (Christoph) built a new home on his land, and being a mason by trade, he made the basement walls two feet thick. August told of a prairie fire that burned the land around their shanty. The only way they could save themselves was to burn the land near their house before the prairie fire passed them. This they did, but were almost suffocated by the intense smoke. An epidemic of diphtheria spread over the neighborhood and took the lives of many of the children. Mrs. Herman Neitzel, sister of August, lost three of her children in less than a week. August Schwichtenberg's father died in the early Nineties and August married in 1893. Then came hard times and August lost the homestead. He rented it for six years and then bought it back again a few years later. August's wife died in 1901. Her three week old baby was then adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Petersmeyer of Tulare. August's sister, Mrs. Neitzel, took his two year old daughter, and he himself kept his four and six year old sons. In 1906 he remarried . In 1917, owing to ill health, August moved to Redfield. During the hard times of the thirties, August again lost his homestead. In 1941 he was delighted to learn that his son, Robert, who had obtained a loan from the Federal Land Bank, had again purchased the homestead, which, with a few years exception, had been in the Schwichtenberg family since 1881. August Schwichtenberg died April 23, 1946, but his son, Robert, born in 1896, still lives on the homestead. ******************************** SCHWICHTENBERG FUNERAL HELD HERE FRIDAY AFTERNOON Had Been Resident of County since 1881; Died on April 23 Funeral services were held here Friday at the American Lutheran Church for August Schwichtenberg, 83, who died April 23, after an illness of several months. The Rev C. J. Burrack was the clergyman in charge of the service. Interment was made in the Crandon-Tulare cemetery. Brief services were held at the home, previous to the church service. Mr. Schwichtenberg had been a resident of Redfield since November 1917. He was born on February 23, 1868 in the village of Gollnow near Stettin, Pomerania, Germany. His first wife, Maria Wendt, whom he married in Redfield in 1893, passed away early in their married life and Mr. Schwichtenberg assumed responsibilities of both mother and father for the four children. He was re-married in 1905 to Paulina Klein. Mr. Schwichtenberg had made his home in Germany until 1879 when he came to this country and settled at Iron Ridge, Wisconsin for about a year and later to South Shore, South Dakota, until homesteading eight miles south of Redfield in 1881. He remained on the farm until 1917 when he moved to Redfield. Survivors include the four children by his first marriage: Albert of Redfield, Robert of Tulare, Mrs. Emil Bobby of Beebe, SD, and Mrs. Amos Schoneman, Escondido, California. Also surviving are many grandchildren, nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends.
