At the age of 14, August was baptized in the Evangelical Lutheran church on the 15th day of January, and in the same year was confirmed, on Palm Sunday in Gros Grossin, Germany. He served three years in the German army and came to America in the year of 1889 and obtained work in this community where he first settled. On January 26, 1893, he was united in marriage to Miss Eva Pinkall in Beloit, Kansas. They lived in Delphos for several years, during this time he worked on the railroad and later they moved to Glasco. This union was blessed with five children, four of whom survive the deceased: Mrs. Clara Hare of Holton; Mrs. Esther Hefflinger of Delphos; Erich Henning and Mrs. Lena Amspacker of Glasco; and one daughter, Elsa Wisinsci, who preceded him in death. Finding that his adopted country was the land of his choice, and wishing to give to her his loyalty and integrity, August spared no effort to become a citizen of the United States, completing his naturalization papers April 20, 1908. In 1900 August and his wife purchased a farm 6 miles northeast of Glasco, where they resided for 27 years of married life, death taking his loving companion, May 13, 1927. Three years after her death, he purchased a home in Glasco, where he resided until two weeks before his death. He was a faithful and active member of the St. Paul's Lutheran church during his earlier days in Glasco. August was a good husband, a kind and loving father and friend and an honest and law abiding citizen. All who knew him recall his faithfulness to his obligations in life. He leaves to mourn his departure his four children, ten grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Martha Gruenthal, and two brothers, Charles Henning of Glasco and Gustav of Kearney, Nebraska. One brother, Fred, preceded him in death. The funeral services were held at St. Paul's Lutheran church in Glasco Tuesday afternoon with Rev. George L. Search, of Waterville, Kansas officiating. The pallbearers were Ernest Grittman, Albert Grittman, Otto Henning, Albert Gruenthal, Henry Henning, and Freddie Henning. Interment in the Glasco cemetery. Lott & Stine were the morticians.
