He died in 1938 of a heart attack at age 75, while trying to dig out his truck that had gotten stuck. * * * * OBITUARY--AUGUST SCHARFF The entire community was shocked and saddened on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 26 to hear of the sudden and unexpected death of August Scharff, one of the older residents. He was born on Mach 12, 1863 on a farm near Bode, Wisconsin, of Christian and Sophie (Finck) Scharff. In early infancy he was baptised in the rural Lutheran church near his home. His early boyhood was spent in the vicinity of Lake Michigan where he attended a rural school. At the age of 14, the family moved from Wisconsin to Iowa, making the trip with a team and wagon. They located on a farm northeast of Aurora. He worked on various farms until his marriage to Mary Margaret Gundlach which occurred on Oct. 2, 1884. For five years they lived on her father's farm where two children, daughter Edith and one son Irvin were born. At this time they purchased a farm 3 1/2 miles northwest of Aurora. As soon as a house and stable were completed they moved to the place which was his home for 45 years. On May 5, 1925 his wife passed away. Then he and his daughter moved to Oelwein for a short time. But he found town life too confining in comparison to the active life he had been leading on the farm; so he and his daughter moved back to the home place to live with his son and family. He enjoyed working out of doors, being especially intereste in horticulture. In 1929 he revisited the scenes of his boyhoodin Wisconsin. This was a trip that he enjoyed very much. About ten years ago he discovered he had a heart weakness and after a short period of illness and rest seemed to recover rapidly. But apparently it gradually grew worse and on Wednesday afternoon while he was on an errand with his car the strain on his heart became too great and he passed away suddenly at the age of 75 years, seven months and 14 days. Having lived three-fourths of a centuary he had seen many changes in the country. At the age of 14, he bound wheat by hand on the first Marsh harvester that came to Fond du Lac county, Wisconsin. He saw the transition of the days of the oxteam to the present machine age. He believed in working hard and living honestly. He was very sincere in his work and in the later days of his life he enjoyed working at various and helpful tasks about the farm. Surviving him are his two children, Edith and Irvin, one grandchild, Elsa Mary, of whom he was especially fond, three brothers, Henry, of Gillet's Grove, Ia., Ernest and Fred of Aurora, Ia., a number of nieces and nephews, neighbors and friends. (Obit in the Oelwein Daily Register, Oct. 31, 1938, page 8) * * * August Scharff The community was shocked that August Scharff, pioneer farmer of this vicinity had passed suddenly away Wednesday while at the home of Anton Kortenkamp, a mile west of here. The son of Christian and Sophia Scharff, he was born 75 years ago at Manitowoc, Wis., and came with the family to this vicinity when a small lad. He was married to Mary Gundlach who preceded him in death in 1925. They resided on the old Gundlach farm for several years then moved to the farm they purchased 3 1/4 miles northwest of Aurora which has since been their home. Two children were born to this union, Edith and Irvin, both at home. Mr. Scharff has enjoyed fair health and until the day of his death assisted daily with the farm work. Besides the two children he is survived by one grandchild and three brothers, Henry of Gillet's Grove, and Ernest and Fred of Aurora. Funeral services were held from the Zion Lutheran church in Oelwein Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock with internment at Madison cemetery here. Casket bearers were Cecil Johnson, John Downer, John Myrton, Guy Bradley, Tom Garrells, and Mr. Wilkenson. Sympathy is extended to the bereaved children. Pieplow, Mr. N. Burco, Mrs. Loeck, Mr. and Mrs. Scott Gundlach, Mr. and Mrs. Irvine Childs, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Sterling Brooks, Chas. Schlumbohm, Ed and Chas.
