He died in 1950 at age 84. * * * Ernie Scharff Ernie Scharff, 84, an Aurora business man for about 50 ears passed away Wednesday afternoon while enroute to visit a physician. He had been ill for the past several weeks. His parents were Christian and Sophia Scharff and their home was on the farm north of Aurora now owned by Will Werner. After moving to town he made his home with his sister, Sophia, until her death and continued to make his home there with his brother Fred and wife. He is survived by his brother Fred and wife, a nephew Carl and wife. Deceased are three brothers and two sisters, August, Will, Henry, Miss Sophia Scharff and Mary Ripke. Funeral services were held from the Kreussel Funeral Home in Lamont Saturday afternoon. Burial was in Madison cemetery. (Obit in the Independence Conservative, May 10, 1950) * * * Obituary Ernest Scharff Ernest (Ernie) Scharff was born June 14, 1865, on a farm in Manitowoc Co., Wis. His parents were Christian Scharff and Sophia Finck Scharff. When he was five years of age the family moved to a farm in Fon-du-lac county, Wis., and in 1877 they established their home 1 1/2 miles northeast of Aurora, Ia., from which home Mr. Scharff moved to Aurora in 1893. He began drilling wells in 1886, specializing in the tubular type of well and continuing this line of work for about eight years. From 1899 until 1912 he assisted his brother, Fred, n the operation of three threshing rings and from 1911 until 1915 he engaged in the sales nd service of motorcycles, selling over 100 machines in this time. His principal and beloved occupation, overshadowing all others, was watchmaking and repairing, which trade he pursued from 1894 until his retirement. He also was fairly skilled in gunsmithing, usually turning out his own parts on his foot treadle lathe. Ernie was an enthusiastic sportsman, skilled with rod and gun, gaining great pleasure from field and stream. Mr. Scharff never married. For the past 30 years he made his home with his brother, Fred, and wife, Marie, enjoying the company of their two sons, Paul and Carl, to whom he was highly devoted. The passing of Mr. Scharff noted the transition from the old school of slow apprenticeship for little or no pay to the new school of rapid instructions for high tuition, further, he acquired his extraordinary skill in watch repairing by his own application, and practically unpaid effort. On his lathe, he turned out parts of hairlike fineness and never failed to return a time piece to perfect condition. To his small shop in a small town came watches from coast to coast, and even foreign lands, sent to him for repair by owners who knew his dependability. Ernie is survived by one brother, Fred of Aurora, several nieces and nephews, plus a never ending chain of friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Mary and Sophia; and three brothers, August, William and Henry. He departed this life May 3, 1950 at the age of 84 years, 10 months and 19 days. Funeral services were held Saturday May 6, 1950, from the Kruessel Funeral home in Lamont with Rev. R. E. Glaser officiating. Chris Hauschen of Aurora accompanied Mrs. Earl Payne of Oelwein who sang "Beautiful Isles of Somewhere," " What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "In the Garden." Howard Haywood, Harly Fry, Herman Graves, James Taylor, Clarence Parker and George Merton were honorary pallbearers. Acting pallbearers were Leland Pelton, F. H. Payne, Ralph Payne, David Hochberger, Clarence Flaskrud and Milton Elliot. Burial was in Madison cemetery near Aurora. (Newspaper obit in family papers)
