Scharnweber had been electrocuted while on duty for the Iowa Public Service company. Word again flashed over the wires that he was not dead and that a desperate effort was being made to revive him. Physicians and a nurse worked over him continuously for two and a half hours. During this trying time the family and his friends without number, could but hope. It was to no avail, and shortly before 12 o'clock "Gus" Scharnweber breathed his last, without gaining consciousness. Mr. Scharnweber in company with E.L. Utter left Carroll Saturday morning for Lytton, where Mr. Scharnweber had been asked to look over the trouble at the substation. Each electrical storm had burned out three main transformers and the company was confident that this skilled electrician could determine the reason for the trouble. When the Carroll men arrived on the scene, linemen from the division construction crew and from Sac City were already at Lytton. They had opened the switch, which removed the connection between the burned out transformers and the transmission lines. Mr. Scharnweber almost immediately located the cause of the trouble. After, directing the workmen in the substation, a small brick building, he and the men went outside. He then re-entered the building. In a moment one of the men heard a shout, saw a flash and saw Mr. Scharnweber falling from the ladder. The electricity had entered his body through the hand and escaped through the opposite foot. August W. Scharnweber was born in Davenport, Ia., January 5, 1869, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Scharnweber. He was a mere lad when, in 1876, his parents moved to Carroll, where he grew to manhood and lived the rest of his life. He was married to Miss Josephine Schiltz, June 16, 1896, and to them were born five daughters and one son: Margaret, Marie, Genevieve, Isabelle, Lillian, and Harry. For 42 years, ever since he was 17 years old, he had worked for the light company in this city. While there were changes in the firm names and a succession of ownership in the establishment, he served, he remained in charge of the special work performed at the beginning and at the time of his death, was in charge of the construction and maintenance in the Carroll property of the Iowa Public Service company. His first employment was for Valentine Hinrichs, who built a planing mill in 1886 on the site of the power house of the central plant. The next year the planing mill was transformed into a power house for a new electric plant. Mr. Hinrichs that year purchased a unit of the Thompson-Huston system, and installed Carrolls first light plant. Young Scharnweber was given practical charge and was prominent in the work of installation and operation. He developed as a practical manager as well as electrician and was so valuable to the service that when Chas. W. Bruner bought the plant a few years later he was retained and given greater responsibilities. And so he continued a valued asset to the practical organization as Addison Brown, J.L. Robb, receiver, and F.C. Ross as manager for later owners headed the company. The "city heating" had been added within the years, and nobody knew more about the general establishment than Gus Scharnweber. When the Hooper Interests gained control and began to extend the scope of the company, even then he was retained as practical electrician and given closer identity with the Carroll plant. The efficiency he had manifested throughout the years of his long service gained for him a confidence on the part of his employers and the city of Carroll that placed him in a class by himself. He was considered an authority on questions within the range of his experience and his opinions were often called for to decide disputed or unsolved questions. It is said by a professional man of the city who worked with him in erecting distribution systems and placing installations in homes and other buildings, that he knew how every one of them was wired and knew also what changes were necessary to bring about better service and greater safety. He carried in his head many details that the records failed to show. His knowledge was accurate and he remembered what was done with remarkable exactitude. The connection of A.W. Scharnweber with the electric plant in Carroll is coeval with its existence. He began at the beginning and stayed with it all his life. He was devoted to its interests and so exact in his work that no trouble ever resulted from a mistake of his or an omission. He was quiet and unobtrusive and passed back and forth in the performance of his duties with modest bearing. For the life he had lived, for the work he had done, he was respected and appreciated for the tragical end that came to him in the performance of his duties, his friends are shocked and his family made desolate. "Gus" Scharnweber was considerate of the men under him and would let no man undertake a job that he himself was afraid to handle. When ever he considered the work especially dangerous, he did it himself rather than let one of his men take a chance. Besides his bereaved family, and parents, he is survived by the following brothers and sister: Anson Scharnweber, Mitchell, S.D.; W.H Scharnweber, this city; Henry Scharnweber, Mitchell, S.D.; Mrs. H.C. Tielje, Tacoma, Wash.; Mrs. L.C. Kline, Orlando, Fla.; Mrs John Drees, this city; Mrs. W Sweet, Melbourn, Fla.; and Mrs. H.J. Stallman, Carroll, Ia. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock at the Ss. Peter and Paul church and burial was made in the catholic cemetery.
