History of Hand County" by Scott Heidepriem, @ 1978, p. 544; (with permission of Scott Heidepriem) Ludwig and Augusta Shonbrun by Deria Simons, Lenore Ufen and Ramona Ufen Ludwig Shonbrun was born to John and Elizabeth Maier Shonbrun on April 6, 1866, near the city of Munich, Germany. His parents moved the family to Munich when Ludwig was six years old. Times were so hard in Germany that Ludwig's father, John (born 1813), borrowed the money to send his family to America where other relatives were living. In the spring of 1882 young Ludwig and his mother, Elizabeth, came to America to Indiana where Mrs. Shonbrun had a sister, Mrs. Anna Westmire. John Shonbrun, though he worked hard, was never able to repay his debt and still save enough money for his own passage to join his family in America. He died brokenhearted in Germany on July 17, 1883. After four years in Indiana, Ludwig (Louis) and his mother followed Mrs. Westmire to South Dakota, near Miller, in 1891. Louis had become a tinner and followed his trade of tinsmithing in Miller. He was the first tinner in Miller and his shop was in a wooden building located behind the Old First National Bank Building. Louis became a United States citizen by naturalization on June 15, 1910. His mother, Elizabeth, died July 17, 1892 in Miller and is buried in the St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery there. On October 4, 1892, Louis married Augusta Danburg of Miller. Their two children were Norma Victoria Shonbrun Danburg and Alta Louise Shonbrun Dale. Louise Shonbrun wrote his own obituary and wrote of himself: "I have all my life been a hard worker, enjoyed the simple beauties of life and at all times wanted to be a good and useful citizen." Indeed he did succeed at being a fine citizen for he was a kind person, always willing to help others. Louis Shonbrun died April 1, 1920. His wife Augusta later married Ev Howe from Ree Heights. Augusta Danburg Shonbrun Howe died on September 20, 1953. Both Louis and Augusta Shonbrun are buried in the GAR Cemetery in Miller, South Dakota. ∼ No stone
