Clarke of Papillion, died Tuesday night at his home at 603 Canyon Drive, Beverly Hills, a suburb of Los Angeles, California, after an illness of one week. The news of his death came as a shock to his many old friends here who had not learned of his illness. Augustus W. Clarke was born April 28, 1841, at Greenwich, N.Y., where he lived until he was 7 years old, going from there to Erie, Pennsylvania, where he spent his boyhood days. In 1864 he came west, locating at Bellevue, then a thriving frontier post, where he joined his brothers H. T. and A. M. engaged in grain and general Merchandise business. In 1876 he erected a large store in Papillion and engaged in the general merchandise business. He also built a large grain elevator here and was one of the leading buyers in this section of Nebraska. He filled many large government orders for grain and feed and while engaged in this business made a number of trips west to Denver by train and on horseback and experienced all the hardships incident to pioneer life. The Banking House of A. W. Clarke was founded by him in 1880 and has since continued in business and is the oldest bank in the county. Later he gave up the grain and merchandise business and devoted his time to the banking business and was at one time a large land holder in Sarpy county and Nebraska, later disposing of most of his landed interests. He was united in marriage to Miss Adelia E. Bell, December 25, 1860, at Erie, Pennsylvania, who was born February 18, 1843. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Clarke, all of whom survive. They are Mrs. Mattie Kelley of New York City, I. D. Clarke, Papillion, Nebraska, Mrs. Jessie Powers who resides with her parents in Beverly Hills, A. W. Clarke, Jr., and J. Edward Clarke of Alamosa, Colorado and Mrs. Grace Pattee of Des Moines. His widow also survives. He was the last of the four Clarke brothers, H. T., A. M., William E. and A. W., all prominently identified with the early development of Bellevue, Sarpy county and eastern Nebraska. Mr. Clarke retired from active business about twenty years ago, spending part of the time at the Clarke home, a landmark just north of Papillion which was destroyed by fire a year ago last Christmas, and a part of the time at various summer resorts. He spent several winters in California and about fifteen years ago built a beautiful home in Beverly Hills, one of the most popular and beautiful residence sections near Los Angeles where he and his wife have since made their home. However, he made several visits yearly back to Papillion and enjoyed visiting with old neighbors and friends. He was a good traveler, hale and hearty until a few years ago when he suffered a severe illness from which he rallied however, but since had not been quite so strong. He made his last visit here last fall and at that time expressed the opinion that it would be his last trip back to the scenes of his early business activities. While engaged in business he accumulated a considerable fortune and enjoyed the fruits of his labors during his declining years. The funeral was held this afternoon at the home in Beverly Hills and the remains placed in a vault until next spring when they will be brought back to Papillion for interment.
