R. & a man long prominent in public life in Platte county, passed away at his home at 518 West 18th Street about 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. He had suffered for sometime with cancer of the stomach & had been bedfast 4 weeks. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Thomas Griffith, pastor of the Federated Church, at the residence at 2:30 p.m. today. Mr. Clark was born in Cherry Valley, Ashtabula county, Ohio, 11 June 1838. When he was 10 yrs. of age the family moved to LaSalle county, Ill. where Mr. Clark received a common school education. On 16 October 1861, he enlisted in the army as a member of company B, Fifty Third Infantry. The command was with Cushman's Brigade. Mr. Clark enlisted first as a musician & was later promoted to sergeant major. With his regiment he participated in the siege of Corinth, the siege of Vicksburg & that of Atlanta & was with Sherman on his famous march to the sea. He received several slight wounds during the campaign. The ranks of the 53rd being almost decimated by heavy losses it was consolidated with the 41st Illinois Infantry & with that command Mr. Clark was mustered out mustered out at Savannah, Ga. 29 December 1864. Returning to Illinois to farm, he married Miss Elizabeth C. Westcott, at Ottawa, Ill. 7 February 1865. They resided in Illinois until 1880 when they came to Platte county purchasing a farm in Columbus township, where he engaged in farming & stock raising. In 1900, they retired from active life upon the farm & moved to Columbus to enjoy a well earned rest. Mr. Clark was for many years an active member of the Masonic, the Modern Woodsmen & Baker Post No. 9, G. A. R. He served sometime as commander of the Post & was its chaplain at the time of his death. He took an active part in democratic policies in Columbus township where he served as clerk for 8 yrs., township supervisor for 8 yrs. & also assessor. After removing to Columbus he acted as precinct assessor & in 1902 was elected a member of the city council where he served for 8 yrs. He leaves his wife, 2 daughters, Mrs. G. A. BERNHARDT of Baker, Ore. & Mrs. Hazel CLARK of Columbus & 3 sons, Ottis W. CLARK of Shelby, Clarence J. CLARK & Eugene A. CLARK, both of Columbus. source: Columbus Telegram 1916 Son of W.O. & Lois (GREENE) CLARK. Married to Elizabeth C. WESTCOTT in Feb. 1886. On October 16, 1861, he enlisted as a member of Company B, Fifty-third Illinois Infantry, the regiment being formed at Ottawa. The command was with Cushman's Brigade. Mr. Clark enlisted first as a musician and was promoted from principal musician to sergeant major. The troops left Ottawa for Camp Douglas, Chicago, relieving General Sullivan's command that was guarding prisoners from Fort Donelson. After about two months they were relieved by newer troops and reported at Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee, in the early part of 1862, remaining at that place for some time. With his regiment Mr. Clark participated in the siege of Corinth, the siege of Vicksburg and that of Atlanta and went with Sherman on the march to the sea. He was slightly wounded in the face and again in the back. The Fifty-third, because of the heavy losses which had decimated its ranks, was consolidated with the Forty-first Illinois Infantry, and with that command Mr. Clark was mustered out at Savannah, Georgia, December 29, 1864. Served as Columbus Clerk, Supervisor, Councilman and Assessor.
