Clark, 89, resident of Columbus & Platte county for more than 55 yrs., died at 8 a.m. today (Friday) at her home, 2522 - 18th St., following a short illness. She sustained a fractured left hip in a fall at her home about a month ago, which rendered her bedfast. Retrogression set in because of her advanced age, & for the last week or 10 days she had been critically ill. Mrs. Clark came to Columbus in the spring of 1880 with her husband, the late Augustus W. CLARK, who died in 1916, from their home in Illinois where they had spent the early years of their lives. As Miss Elizabeth Cynthia WESTCOTT, she was born on 26 October 1847 in NY state, the family moving to Illinois a few years later. Her father, George W. WESTCOTT, was a blacksmith, & the family lived for a time in Aurora, Ill. & later in LaSalle & other counties. As a young woman, she met Mr. Clark, a veteran of the civil war, who served for 3 yrs. with the union army, after he received his honorable discharge & returned to LaSalle county Illinois to farm. Their marriage took place there on 7 February 1865 & they resided on a farm in LaSalle county until they moved to Nebraska. Arriving in Columbus, they bought a 160 - acre tract of land 4 miles north of Columbus, where they farmed until 1898 when they retired & moved into the city. For many years Mrs. Clark was an active member of the Women's Relief Corps, but in recent years she found she could not take an active part any longer because of her advanced age & at the time of her death she was an honorary member. She is survived by 3 sons, Otis, Clarence J., & Eugene A. CLARK, all of Columbus; 2 daughters, Mrs. Myrtle BERNHARDT of Baker, Ore. & Miss Hazel Clark, of Columbus; a brother, Ed WESTCOTT of Sidney, Mont.; a sister, Mrs. Ann SALMON of Portland, Ore.; 14 grandchildren & 3 great grandchildren. 2 daughters, Mrs. J. F. MCGILL & Miss Fannie CLARK, & a son, Gus CLARK, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Gass Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ray H. Turner, pastor, of the Federated Church, officiating. Burial will be made in Columbus Cemetery. Her daughter, Mrs. Bernhardt, of Baker, Ore. arrived here a week ago, after having been notified of her serious illness & was with her when death came. source: Columbus Telegram Friday 30 October 1936
