Nine children were born to them, and with but one exception, all lived to maturity. Harriet, the third child, died at the age of eleven. William Harrison Loud Jan. 18, 1841 Mar. 16, 1887 In 1832, Austin left Westhampton with his family and moved to Kirtland, Ohio, where he built a grist and saw mill in which the lumber for the Mormon Temple was sawed. In Kirtland, they lived in a log house and their children went to school in the winter in a log house. After remaining there three years, and becoming disgusted with Mormon society, in the winter of 1836, he moved to the little town of Huntsburg, Ohio, which was about twenty miles east and south of Kirtland and about twenty-five miles south of Lake Erie. The farm near Huntsburg had four log houses and a log dam upon it. The living house consisted of three rooms. The cooking was done over a big fire on the hearth and the baking was done in a tin oven in front of the fire. This farm was about sixty acres, had a small stream, a dam and a sawmill. When they first moved to Huntsburg, large game was abundant. The wolves howled at night and deer were plentiful. It was a common occurrence to look out of the door of their log house and see wild turkeys about the farm. Austin Loud had a flintlock gun but changed it over and put on a percussion lock to shoot the game as they needed. The sawmill he built in Kirtland had a single sash saw and it would cut about one thousand feet a day of poplar, black walnut, basswood, cucumber and oak. The timber was taken out with horses and oxen. In Westhampton he had a hand-turning lathe and made the bobbins used in looms for weaving cloth. In Westhampton he also owned a small water-power sawmill on a stream running through the central part of the village. The dam was perhaps twenty feet long with a six to eight-foot fall, and an overshot wheel. He used white birch in this mill. In the spring of 1836, he built a church at Montville, Ohio. During the summer of 1837, he erected a church at Ravenna, Ohio. He built a sawmill in Huntsburg and in 1839, he built a dwelling for his own family. Austin Loud passed as a Whig and later became an Abolitionist or anti-slavery man, on the formation of that party. His house furnished shelter, food and care for fugitive slaves going from South to Canada. This was known as the Underground Railroad. The service rendered to the Negro was so well understood that none of the family was afraid of them day or night. Many of the churches that Austin built are still being used in 1980. After the last dwelling he built in 1839, Austin Loud spent the remainder of his life, like the apostle Paul, laboring with his hands for his necessities and with his heart, faithfully doing his Master's work to the end. He was an earnest, everyday Christian, strictly temperate in all his habits, anti-slavery of the Garrison stripe of the strictest sort. He died in Huntsburg, OH. at the age of 54 from congestion of the lungs. His eldest son said it was caused from wood dust while working in the shop at Westhampton. He is buried in Huntsburg, Ohio. The pictures of Austin and Mehetable Loud were refurbished by their son, Henry M. Loud, about 1880. The author (C.
