The death of Austin Reed removes from Coffey county one of the best known men in this vicinity. Mr. Reed was a man of high character and had a large circle of friends, who mourn his death. He is survived by one of the most highly esteemed families in the county who have the sincere sympathy of their friends and neighbors. He was a good man in every way. Austin Reed was born in Meigs county, Ohio, May 21, 1845, and died in Burlington, Kans., November 14, 1908; aged 63 years, 5 months and 23 days. At the age of sixteen he enlisted in the Civil War October 8, 1861. On July 24, 1867 he was united in marriage with Rebecca Hawley; to this union were born eight children, all of whom are living. They are; Mrs. John Shobe, Strawn; E. M. Reed, Yates Center; Mrs. Geo. Alexander, Burlington; Myron A. of Burlington; Mrs. Velascoe Sanders, of Burlington; Guy C., Burlington; and Misses Bertha and Mabel who are still at home. In 1879, he with his wife and four children removed to Kansas and settled on a farm in this county, ten miles north-east of Burlington, where he made his home until September of this year, when on account of failing health he moved to this city. Thirty five years ago he was converted and united with the Christian church of which he was a member until his death. He was a member of company C, 63 Ohio Vol., Inft. was with Buell's army in reinforcing Grant at Shiloh, where he was seriously wounded. He was in the Battle of Chicakamauga where he was again wounded. Later served with the army of Tennessee, in the Atlantic campaign and made the famous march with Sherman to the sea, and was discharged at the close of the war. Additional Information: According to family records, Austin enlisted to fight in the Civil War in the Union Army in 1861 as a private. He lied about his age, telling the army that he was 18 years of age when he was actually only sixteen. Austin was wounded in April, 1862 at Shiloh, Tennessee in the famous "Battle of Shiloh." The gunshot that he received during the battle passed clear through the torso of his body, but after months of recovery he was able to return to duty. He was wounded again in September,1863 at the Battle of Chickamauga in northern Georgia, near Chattanooga, Tennessee. The second wound included a gunshot into the left shoulder which passed about six inches up through his neck and then exited. After a time he fully recovered from this injury and joined General Sherman's "March to the Sea." By the close of the war, Austin had been promoted to the rank of sergeant and he was finally discharged from the Union Army on July 8, 1865. After Austin moved to Kansas he farmed 160 acres that he had purchased. He had a fruit orchard on the farm as well. In his spare time he would play the piano and conduct singing lessons at several of the country schoolhouses. According to census records & family D.A.R. records, Austin's parents were Sylvester Salvanus Reed, b.9-1-1816 in Meigs Co., OH., d.6-26-1895 in Long Bottom, Ohio (buried in the Joppa Cemetery, near Reedsville, OH.), & Emily (McIntyre) Reed, b.11-28-1820 in Meigs Co., OH., d.2-2-1874 in Long Bottom, Ohio (buried in the Joppa Cemetery, near Reedsville, OH.). Sylvester & Emily married in Meigs Co., Ohio on 12-21-1843. Sylvester's father was Major Reed, b.9-13-1789 possibly in New York state, d.7-26-1879, in Reedsville, Ohio, the town for which he founded in 1855 & for whom it is named. Major Reed is buried in the Reedsville, Ohio Cemetery. Sylvester's mother was Salvinia (Barstow) Reed, b.8-9-1799 in Belpre, Ohio, d.7-9-1836, in Meigs Co., OH. (buried in the Reedsville, Ohio Cemetery). Major and Salvinia were married on 10-15-1814. Their children were Sylvester, Manly (1817-1877; buried in Meigs Co., Ohio), Cornelia S. (Reed) Rose (1831-1902; buried in Athens Co., OH). & possibly another brother named Franklin Reed (1828-1904; also buried in Reedsville, Ohio) as well as other children whose names are unknown. Emily McIntyre's parents were Joseph McIntyre, b.1781 in Pennsylvania, d.between 1850 & 1860 in Ohio (believed to be buried in Joppa Cemetery in Meigs Co., OH.) and Hannah McIntyre, b.8-6-1873 in Pennsylvania, d.11-2-1852 in Meigs Co., OH. (buried in the Joppa Cemetery, Meigs Co., OH.) Emily is believed to be the seventh child out of fourteen born to Joseph and Hannah. Meigs Co. records indicate that Sylvester & Emily had Austin in 1845, Ocella (Reed) Hawley in 1847, Florival Howell Reed in 1849, Lafayette Reed in 1851, Clinton Reed in 1852, & Winslow Reed in 1865. Ancestry records indicate there may have been as many as eight children to them but the other names are unknown. All of Austin's siblings listed here are buried near Reedsville, Meigs County, Ohio.
