REED'S FUNERAL TUESDAY (April 18, 1916) The funeral of Mrs. Rebecca A Reed was held in the Christian Church yesterday morning. Music was furnished by a male quartet composed of Z.H. Held, Chester Held, Wm. Meairs and Ray Lessig. The pall bearers were her six oldest grandsons, Clement, Raymond, Oren, Glenn and Stanley Reed and Ralph Shobe. Prayer was offered by the regular minister and the sermon was given by W.H. Nation who was her minister for three years, the last she had been able to attend church. Rebecca A. Hawley was born March 31, 1849 and died in Burlington, Kansas at 9:30 o'clock, on Sunday evening, April 16, 1916, aged 67 years and 15 days. On July 24, 1867 she was united in marriage with Austin Reed; to this union were born eight children, all of whom are living. They are; Mrs. John Shobe, Strawn, Kans; E.M. Reed, Mrs. George Alexander, Myron, Mrs. V.L. Sanders, all of Burlington. Guy C. Reed of Edinburg, Texas; Mrs. W.L. Bivin of Chicago, Illinois, and Mrs. N.B. Mahuron of Bucklin, Kansas. She leaves twenty-three grandchildren and is also survived by five brothers and two sisters. In 1879, she with her husband and four children moved to Kansas and settled on a farm in this county, northeast of Burlington, where she made her home until 1908 when the family moved to Burlington. Her husband departed this life on November 14th of the same year. In early girlhood she became a Christian and united with the Christian Church of which she was a devoted member the remainder of her life. Death was the result of a cancerous growth from which she has suffered for several months yet during the intense suffering of the past five or six weeks she showed the greatest patience, constantly appreciative of every kindness shown her. Her constant prayer was "Thy will be done." She left this message to her grandchildren: "Serve your Master every day you can." Although expressing sorrow that she must leave her family she said she was ready to go and rejoiced that she had been privileged to see them all develop into men and women, and that they with one exception were permitted to be with her to cheer her in her last illness. Her great joy was that every one of her children and all of the grandchildren of sufficient age had united with the church she loved."Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from henceforth; yea saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow them." Because of her love for her family, her loyalty to the church and her interest in its every department of work, rather than to say she will be missed, her friends say she will be remembered. This is witnessed in the large number of friends gathered and the beautiful floral offerings.Interment was made in the Graceland Cemetery beside the body of her husband. ******* For Rebecca's funeral, her daughter Mabel (who loved to write poetry) composed a fitting poem, entitled, "Mother," in her memory. Mabel read the poem as follows... "Mother" Those hands were stilled; but just for rest; She'd followed Him; His way was best. And now she treads the other shore, But we'll not say her work was o'er; Will rather say, when eyes are wet, "She does the task His hands have set." ******* Rebecca was born in Meigs Co., Ohio near the area that became Reedsville, Ohio in 1855. Reedsville lies right along the edge of the busy Ohio River. Rebecca was the seventh child out of ten children that were born to William M. and Rebecca (Adams) Hawley. She was just 18 years of age when she married Austin Reed, the oldest son of Sylvester and Emily (McIntyre) Reed. Rebecca's family were long-time friends and acquaintances with the Reed family. Rebecca's oldest sister Elizabeth married Austin's cousin, Major Reed, and her older brother James married Austin's younger sister Ocella. For 12 years after being married, Rebecca and Austin made their home near Reedsville (which was founded and named after Austin's grandfather, Major Reed, 1789-1879). While there, Rebecca gave birth to their first four children, Millie, Everett, Clara & Myron. In the late 1870's Austin decided that he wanted to move westward and start a new life on the frontier. In order to do this, Austin purchased a 160 acre plot of land in Coffey County, Kansas. The plot was probably cheaply obtained homestead land and Austin may have gotten the land even cheaper due to the fact that he was a military veteran. As a result of the purchase, Rebecca & Austin packed up all of their earthly belongings in the spring of 1879 & took their four children westward by covered wagon to Coffey County. The journey was overland about one-thousand miles from Meigs County to Coffey County and it took several weeks before they arrived at their plot located ten miles northeast of Burlington, Kansas. During their journey westward, Rebecca was a few months pregnant with their fifth child Jennie. Jennie was born just a few months after their arrival in Kansas. Over the next few years, farming was very difficult. Austin raised wheat, and had a fruit orchard, in addition to chickens, cows and other farm animals. The farm was so difficult that Austin was nearly foreclosed on in the early 1890's but his oldest son Everett purchased half of the 160 acres and helped with the mortgage in order to save the farm. Even so it was still hard farming in that area and even Everett eventually moved his family further west to farm there. Austin also was very musical. He was a vocalist and could play the piano and organ. As a result, he went to the area schools and taught music. This may have been a way for him to earn extra income. Austin passed his musical talent onto nearly all of his children. Several of them could sing, play the piano, and/or the organ. Once Rebecca and Austin were in Kansas, they were there for good. There is no evidence that they ever returned to Ohio for even a short visit or for family funerals. When Rebecca's parents died in 1896 there is no evidence that she was able to make it back for their funerals. The same was true when Austin's father died in 1895. Travel expenses that great of a distance back to Ohio were probably too high at that time. It is interesting that several of Rebecca's siblings also came west to Kansas. Her sister Elizabeth and her husband Major (Austin's cousin) came to Kansas for a while, but eventually they moved back to Reedsville. Rebecca's younger brothers William and David also ended up coming to Kansas and lived out the rest of their lives there. Rebecca gave birth to her eighth and final child, Mabel, in 1887, at the age of 38. Through all of the years of hardship on the farm, they were fortunate that all eight of their children lived well into adulthood. Rebecca and Austin lived on the farm for 28 years before Austin's health started to decline. In 1908 they moved from the farm to a house in Burlington (probably to be closer to Austin's doctor). (A photo of their home in Burlington still exists, but this home was razed in later years. The house was located on Yuba St. between 7th and 8th Ave.). Mabel and her sister Bertha lived at the home with them and helped care for Austin. Austin's poor health finally overcame him and he passed away in May of 1908. Upon Austin's passing they had lived in Kansas for 29 years and they had been married for 41 years. Rebecca continued to live at her home in Burlington for another eight years with her children and grandchildren frequently visiting. One of her grandsons, Clement Reed, even lived with her while he attended school for a time. Rebecca eventually passed away in 1916 of cancer. Sadly, the disease caused a substantial amount of suffering for her the last few months of her life. Upon her passing, she was 67 years of age and had lived in Kansas for nearly 37 years. Rebecca A.
