Description	:	Barbara was born in Deinsdorf (Weigendorf), Bavaria in 1833, the fourth of five known daughters born to Stephan (or Stephen) and Anna Maria "Mary" Hutter (Hüther). At this point in history the Kingdom of Bavaria was an independent, sovereign state in the German Empire. Read More	Barbara was born in Deinsdorf (Weigendorf), Bavaria in 1833, the fourth of five known daughters born to Stephan (or Stephen) and Anna Maria "Mary" Hutter (Hüther). At this point in history the Kingdom of Bavaria was an independent, sovereign state in the German Empire. From a member on familysearch, found in a Royal Bavarian Intelligence Paper, "Stephan Hutter from Teunz and his wife Maria intend with their five children: Anna Maria, Eva Katharina, Susanna, Barbara and Anna, to emigrate to North America"... was dated June, 1845. Barbara then emigrated with her parents and four sisters in 1846 aboard the Bark (barque) Therese, which sailed from Hamburg. On the eleven-week voyage to America, her mother became ill, died and was buried at sea in the Atlantic, per family history. The actual passenger manifest does not show her demise, however no written records of the mother can be found in the U.S. and many references to her death on this voyage can be found. The vessel arrived in the port of New Orleans on Dec 28, 1846. The passenger manifest includes Stephen Hüther (Hutter), age 55, with 6 females: Anna Maria, age 51, Catharina age 24, Anna Maria age 22, Susanna age 15, Barbara age 12, and Anna Maria age 8. Their destination was listed as St. Louis. Digital images of the full passenger manifest of the Bark Therese can be found on NARA M259, Roll 26, Images 165-169. The family's surname is listed many different ways in ship manifests, marriage records in Missouri and Iowa, State and US census records, cemetery records, books and pamphlets on the history of Dyersville, Dubuque County and Iowa. The most common, especially in the Catholic Church records and obituaries, is Hutter, but it is also found as Hüther, Huter, Hutner, Hoolis, Hutater and Hutterer. The Hutter family met up with some other Bavarian families in St. Louis, Missouri, where the eldest two sisters; Katharine (Johann Pregler) and Anna Marie (George Steger, Sr) both were married on April 13, 1847, the day before their youngest sister's 10th birthday. George Steger's sister Margaretha (John Platzer) also married this same day, all by Catholic priest, Father Xavier Dahmen. Sisters Susana (Anton Reittinger) and Anna (John E Pilmaier) would marry by Jan, 1849 and circa 1853, respectively, with Susana remarrying (Herman Plathe) after being widowed. Many of the Bavarian group, including many of Barbara's family, traveled by boat up river to Dubuque in the spring of 1847. They transferred their belongings to wagons for the remainder of their trip & eventually arrived in the area that would one day be Dyersville. Barbara's father bought land and set about farming in the New Wine Township area. This was where Barbara met Theodore, after he immigrated to New York from the Village of Laer, near Bochum, Kingdom of Prussia, in May of 1850 and soon made his way to Iowa. They were married at St. Boniface Church in New Vienna on September 3, 1850, Barbara a few months past age 17 and Theodore recently turning 26. The towns of their birth were less than 400 miles apart, but they had each traveled across a vast ocean to meet & unite in marriage in Iowa. Theodore had purchased 40 acres of land from the government for $1.25/acre. As this land was wild and needed to be cleared to farm, a log house was his first home. He bought another 40 acres from Barbara's father when they married. For the sum of $200 he purchased 80 more from his brother-in-law, Anton Reittinger and in 1896, another 40 from Mr. Meis. It was on this 200 acre homestead that Barbara and Theodore brought their 13 children into the world, even adopting another, Frank Ritz, into their home and raising him as their own. Barbara's father also lived with them, as shown on the U.S. censuses from 1850 through 1870. After 71 years of life, traveling across the ocean as a young girl, losing her mother on the voyage, bearing 13 children and adopting another, caring for her aging, widowed father, her husband and large family, Barbara passed away in the late summer of 1904. Barbara was survived by her husband Theodore, 3 sons; Theodore Goerdt, Jr., Joseph Francis Goerdt and Frank Ritz, 3 daughters; Mrs. Anna Kern, Mrs. Maria Anna Demmer and Catherine Goerdt, and 2 sisters; Mrs. Anna Maria Steger and Mrs. Anna Maria Pilmaier.
