Description	:	April 11, 1912 - Carroll Times - Pioneer lady Found Dead - Barbara Schmitt was found dead in the southwestern corner of the golf grounds yesterday morning by Miss Emma Ludwig who was on her way to the country to open school in the Floyd district. Miss Ludwig reported the gruesome find to Joseph Pietig who lives not far away and the remains of the aged woman were then put in charge of Joseph Laughlin, the undertaker. Read More	April 11, 1912 - Carroll Times - Pioneer lady Found Dead - Barbara Schmitt was found dead in the southwestern corner of the golf grounds yesterday morning by Miss Emma Ludwig who was on her way to the country to open school in the Floyd district. Miss Ludwig reported the gruesome find to Joseph Pietig who lives not far away and the remains of the aged woman were then put in charge of Joseph Laughlin, the undertaker. Mrs Schmitt is one of the older resident of Roselle township and lived with her son Joseph on the old homestead about two miles south of the old Brewery. She left home Friday morning and came to Carroll where she attended Easter services stopping with her daughters, Mrs William Wille and Mrs John Zurn. About 5 o'clock Monday evening she started for home and as was her want, walked across the golf ground. Nothing was known of her until the report that she had been found dead as above stated. Her daughters took for granted that she had arrived safe at home and her sons family supposed she was still with her daughters in Carroll. She had been affected with heart trouble for years and it is reasoned that death was due to an attack on her way home. Coroner Kessler was notified of the occurence but decided, on looking into the matter, that it was unnecessary to hold an inquest. The deceased was past 81 but was considered in fairly good health with the exception of the heart affliction mentioned. She came to this country with her family 39 years ago, her husband Joseph Schmitt dying 9 years ago. She is survived by three sons: George, Joseph, and John besides the daughters named. The funeral was held from Ss. Peter and Paul church this Thursday forenoon.
