Schmitt, Sr., well-known retired farmer, died at the St. Anthony Hospital at 4:3O p.m., Tuesday at the age of seventy-eight years. His condition was critical when he was taken to the hospital from his home, 115 South Main Street, last Saturday. The body will be returned Friday afternoon from the Luft Funeral Home to the family residence, where it will rest until the time of the rites. Services will be at 9 o'clock Monday morning at SS. Peter and Paul's Church, with the Rev. L. Schenkelberg offering the requiem mass. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, and pallbearers will be Nick Mueller, Herman Pietig, Henry Sibenaller, George Simons, Henry J. Franzwa, and M.M. Nagl. Mr. Schmitt was an early settler of Carroll county, having come here in 1873. He was born in Germany, Dec. 21, 1862, a son of Joseph and Barbara Schmitt. In 1871 the family came to the United States from Karbach, Bavaria, Germany, locating at Brooklyn, N.Y., where they lived for two years. From there they came to Carroll county. May 10, 1899 Mr. Schmitt was married to Miss Barbara Schupenitz of Carroll at SS. Peter and Paul's Church here. They spent their married life on their farm three miles south of Carroll, where they were living when Mrs. Schmitt died Dec. 25, 1930. In 1932, Mr. Schmitt retired from the farm to make his home in Carroll. His only son, Edward, died April 8, 1937. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Katharine Zurn of Carroll; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Edward Schmitt (Helen) of Corning, Calif.; one brother-in-law, Henry Schupenitz of Carroll, and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Montefering of Parkston, S.D., and Mrs. Elizabeth Schmitt of Carroll. Besides his wife and son, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph E. and John B. Schmitt, and one sister, Mrs. W. Wille. Mr. Schmitt was a pioneer member of SS. Peter and Paul's Church. He died well fortified with the last sacraments.
