He was born at Windfall, Indiana, May 8, 1861. His father, Valentine Harlan, was a native of Iowa, and died in 1864. After the death of the father Barton Ashley Harlan was taken back to Indiana by his mother, whose maiden name was Martha Adams. Her father was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Valentine Harlan was a shoemaker by trade. Barton A. Harlan grew up in Indiana, had a public school education and learned the trade of printer. When he started to work he first located at Cambridge, Nebraska, where a brother was living, and the two conducted the Cambridge Kaleidoscope until 1886. In January, 1886, Mr. Harlan took some printing equipment to Colorado and founded the Otis Enterprise. Three issues were published in a box car. The citizens failed to keep their promise to provide room for his newspaper plant, and it was for this reason that the first issues were printed in the box car. The railroad officials finally became impatient ordering him to get his stuff out of the car, having no place to put it he remained. One day, acting under instructions, the railroad crew gave his car a terrific jolt, that pied not only the type but nearly everything else. After threatening to return to Nebraska Mr. Harlan finally brought the citizens to time, and he remained at Otis for several years, publishing his newspaper, and while there he took up a homestead and was appointed postmaster under President Cleveland. Later Mr. Harlan went back to Morefield, Nebraska, and in 1889 took part in the original rush to the new lands at the opening of Oklahoma territory. After being there three months he left all he had, after which he found his way to Denver, and subsequently established the Stockville Sentinel. After selling this plant at a good profit he went on to Dayton, Wyoming, started the Tongue River News and from there came into Montana. Mr. Harlan's connections with the newspaper business in Montana were chiefly in Carbon County, where he established the Carbon County Sentinel at Joliet. After disposing of this newspaper he removed to the Clarke Fork Valley, took up a homestead and afterward started the Free Press at Bridger. Subsequently he established another newspaper at Joliet, known as the Joliet Journal, and continued in the newspaper business there until 1927, when he retired and has since made his home at Ronan. Mr. Harlan began his political career as a staunch Democrat and was a delegate to a Nebraska State Convention in 1890, when W. J. Bryan was just coming into political prominence. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, he and his wife belong to the Eastern Star and he is affiliated with the Modern Woodmen of America. Mr. Harlan has seen a great deal of development in Montana since coming to the state. While living in Carbon County he witnessed at Joliet some of the trades by which the Indians bargained away their rights to valuable land for a mere song, in one instance trading land for a skinny cayuse and at other times disposing of the property rights for a handful of silver. Mr. Harlan married Miss Anne M. Logan of Nebraska, who died in 1889, leaving two children. The son, Charles B., now operator and part owner of the Columbus News, is married and has three children named, Ruth, Margaret and Donna. Lila Harlan, the daughter, became the wife of Walter J. Clarke, superintendent of the Consumers Gas Company at Sunburst, Montana. Mr. Harlan's second wife was Mrs. Mary Donaldson Rogers, a widow. She had three children by a former marriage; Mrs. Grace Gillespie, who died at Missoula in 1929; James D. Rogers, of Oilmont, Montana and Jessie R. Plummer, of Spokane. Mrs. Harlan takes an interested part in the social and civic life of the community of Ronan.
