Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 7, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Fort Benton Elementary School auditorium. Burial at Riverside cemetery, with a reception to follow at the Vets club in Fort Benton. Beatty was born July 23, 1924 to August and Mary Klay and grew up on the family ranch at Shonkin. Beatty married Johnny Draper, of Lewiston, Maine, in Dec. of 1946, after being pen pals for three and one half years during World War II. They had met at a function sponsored by the Fort Benton community for soldiers stationed at Malmstrom AFB shortly before those soldiers were sent to the South Pacific. Johnny and Beatty made their home and raised their family in this area. He preceded her in death in Nov. 1977. Instilled deeply in Beatty was the Montana work ethic. Whether she was hauling wheat during WWII, growing a half acre garden or polishing Fort Benton's elementary school to a sheen, she gave her utmost. After working 21 years for the schools Beatty retired this spring. Staff and students alike honored her for her dedication and caring ways. Survivors include daughters, Wanda Zaccone, Billings; Connie Jenkins, Fort Benton; Pam Sorenson, Federal Way, Wash.; Jill Highfill, Shonkin; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
