ESTEEMED FORMER AKRON FARMER IS CALLED BY DEATH Last Rites Held Here On October 31 For Ben H. Hartmann Ben H. Hartman, a widely-known farmer of this vicinity, passed away at his home south of Hawarden on Thursday morning, October 27, 1949, at the age of 74 years. He had been in failing health the past several years, but always managed to be up and around; however, his condition became alarming this past September and he was admitted as a patient in the Akron Hospital. After several weeks he returned to his home, but never fully recovered his former strength, and gradually became weaker until the final summons came. Behrend Heyen Hartmann, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Heyen Hartmann, was born in Volfkuhlen, Otendorf, Germany, on September 30, 1875. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church at Aurich, Germany. On March 20, 1897, he was united in marriage with Trientje Satthoff (actually Saathoff). (Mr. and Mrs. Hartmenn were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary in 1947.) In 1898 Mr. and Mrs. Hartmann left their home in Germany and came to the United States, settling at Wahoo, Nebraska. Six months later the family came to Iowa. Mr. Hartmann was an industrious worker and farmed in the vicinity of Akron for 40 years. Some ten years ago the family moved to a farm south of Hawarden. “Ben,” as he was known to all, was a familiar figure on many farms in the Akron and Hawarden vicinities. He was a loyal and faithful friend. He was a friend of the poor and needy and had a special interest in children. Left to mourn his passing are, his devoted wife, Trientje; five sons, Harry, of Alcester, S.D.; Alfred, of Craig, Iowa; John, George and William, of Hawarden; three daughters, Mrs. Henry Helmrichs and Mrs. Fred Jacobs, of Akron, and Mrs. George Kruse; three sisters, Mrs. Tilda Doyen, of Pomeroy, Iowa, and two living in Germany; ten grandchildren, and a host of friends. Mr. Hartmann was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran church, Chatsworth. IT was necessary to hold the funeral service in Trinity Lutheran church, Akron, in order to accommodate all the relatives and friends who assembled to pay their last respects. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, October 31, with the Rev. J. A. Paunkuk in charge. Trinity choir sang appropriate hymns. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.
