QUATHAMER Ben F. (Bennie) Quathamer was born in Buck Grove to Benhard and Emma (Mohrmann) Quathamer in 1902. The family, including his two sisters, Irene and Martha, moved to Defiance in 1917 when Benhard bought the Defiance Drug Co. Bennie graduated from the Defiance Public School in 1922 and from Creighton School of Pharmacy in 1924. He married Constance (Connie) Gould, daughter of Elmer and Mary (Williams) Gould from Humphrey, Nebraska in 1924. Their five children are: Helen C. Hanson, Robert, Dorothy (Mrs. M.J. Manion), Mary Lou (Mrs. Francis Goeser) and Ben. After graduation from Creighton University, Bennie joined his father in operating the Defiance Drug Store. He became the sole proprietor after his fath. er's death in 1937. The Drug Store in Defiance was a meeting place for all, five minutes or several hours. After the fire in January of 1949 that leveled three businesses, the Drug Store was relocated in the old hotel building. Because of Benny's failing health, he and Connie moved to Council Bluffs in 1954, where he died in 1956. Bennie was affiliated with Masonic Lodge and in 1980 Connie was presented a certificate and pin honoring her 50.year membership in the Defiance Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
