After the sermon, the Red Oak Masonic lodge, of which he was a member, took charge of the body and carried out the beautiful and impressive services of the order. The body was interred in the Villisca Cemetery. Mr. Bean had been a resident of Montgomery County for many years and at one time was among the most energetic and pushing of our farmers. He was an efficient member of our county board for two terms, and quite prominent in political circles. Of late years, he has lived a retired life and had just sold out, expecting to move to town and enjoy the fruits of his early labors, when he was stricken down. He leaves a wife, a daughter, married. His only son, Oscar was killed a short time since, in a railroad wreck in Nebraska, the sad details of which are still fresh in the minds of our readers. Villisca Review, Thursday, April 6, 1893, page 7 Benjamin Franklin Bean was born on February 2, 1833, in Warner, New Hampshire to Sarah Eaton Webster, age 35, and John Bean, age 56. He married Elizabeth Strider on December 26, 1858, in Randolph County, North Carolina. They had one child during their marriage. He died on April 1, 1893, in Villisca, Iowa, at the age of 65, and was buried there. Children, Mary Melissa, Oscar, Cora, and Cass. He died Apr. 1, 1898 in Villisca, Montgomery County, Iowa.∼Frank was born in N.H., to Folsom Bean and Nancy Hamblin, but traveled west as a young adult, ending up in Iowa, where, in 1860, he was living with his brother, Joel H. Bean, in Douglas, Montgomery County, Iowa. Also living in the same household, working as a domestic, was Abbie McFarland. By 1870, they were married and had established their own home in Douglas, and also had two children: Oscar Whittier Bean, born 8 August 1862; and Cora Mavine, born, 16 March 1867. When Frank died in 1893, the following appeared in the Red Oak, Iowa, Independent newspaper: "Frank Bean, a member of the Red Oak Masonic Lodge, died last Saturday afternoon of canker of the stomach. Mr. Bean was in his sixty-third year and was a well known person throughout the county. His funeral took place at Villisca last Monday and was conducted by the lodge of this place. About thirty-five members besides four ladies: Mrs. Leob, Mrs. Kretchmer, Mrs. Horton and Mrs. Remmers, went over on the noon train, returning at eight in the evening. The lodges at Villisca and Milford assisted in the funeral rites." Here is his Last Will and Testament: "The Last Will and Testament of Franklin G. Bean of Douglas Twp., Montgomery Co. Iowa, made and devised this 7th day of March, 1893, at 4:30 o'clock p.m. "I, Franklin G. Bean, being of sound mind, and in possession of all my mental faculties, do make, and by these presents, ordain this to be my last Will and Testament: "I do hereby make and bequeath unto my daughter, Mrs. Cora M. Clark the sum of One Thousand ($1,000.00) Dollars in cash, and unto my grandson, Frank B. Clark, the sum of One Hundred ($100.00) Dollars in cash. I also make and bequeath unto my grandson, Thadeus W. Bean, the sum of One Hundred ($100.00) Dollars in cash. "The entire balance of my property, both monies and chattles, I make and bequeath unto my wife, Abbie Bean, to be dealt with as she desires, after all my debts have been paid and satisfied in full. "Signed and sealed this 7th day of March, 1893. Franklin G. Bean." Three weeks later Frank died. Inventoried as his estate, are the following items: 200 bushels of corn 2 tons of hay One team of horses One cow One two-seated top buggy Five head of hogs and Household goods and furniture. His was an industrious and well lived life.
