Cannon, which occurred on Monday, May 11th, Georgetown has lost a citizen whose character and sterling worth will be felt for all time, for it is of such men that the foundation principles of honor, integrity, and christian civilization of a community must be made up and maintained. The loss of such a man removed one of the basic stones from the foundations, and who will take his place? Born in Horry County, not far from Conway, on April 10th, 1854, Mr. Cannon was therefore just beyond his 71st year. He had a powerful and manly way. Once and up to a few months and had always been blessed with good health, so that few realized that he had reached the ripe old age of three score years and ten. Coming to Georgetown County when a comparatively young men, Mr. Cannon engaged successfully in the turpentine business and in time accumulated a considerable fortune in money and lands. Along with many others, in these later days, however, he suffered severe loses due to adverse conditions and a too generous faith in those whom he hoped to help by financial assistance. Personal family sorrows coming quickly together in his latter years, and these other typing calamities, doubtless hastened passing of this fine man, whose brave spirits and generous impulses kept him active and a moving figure in all the social and community affairs that were going on around him. Over and above all the traits of character that distinguished Mr. Cannon was his simple and abiding faith in God and the salvation of the Lord Jesus Christ. He was a life long member of the Methodist Church and a devoutly regular attendant at the services of the Duncan Memorial Methodist Church. On every Tuesday noon, up to the time he was confined to his bed he was always present at the Men's Prayer Meeting at the Movie Theater, and he showed same personal interest in every movement which was designed to make for the improvement and progress of his town and country at large. Mr. Cannon was highly regarded by all who knew him, he was pleasant and affable always, conscientious and reliable in all he did and open and honest as the day. The community, in his passing, with a tribute worth more than any other in their gift can say, with sad faces and tear stained cheeks, "Behold an honest man, and one in whom there is no guile," May he rest in peace and in the conscientiousness of a life well spent for God and humanity. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. May F. Cannon, and two daughters Mrs. H. C. Bruns and Mrs. C. Downing Blount. The funeral services were conducted in the Duncan Memorial Methodist Church at 11 o'clock with the Rev. W. J. Snyder, in the presence of a large congregation, and the remains were interred in Elmwood Cemetery. The floral offerings were abundant and most beautiful. The following gentleman acted as pall bearers: Charles Lohr, L. J. McConnell, Ralph Ford, W. W. Taylor, C. L. Whittin, Arthur LaBruce, J. M. Turner and F. Ashford.
