Description	:	Berendina was born in Varssevelt, Gelderland Province in the Netherlands, the daughter of Evert and Wilemina Johanna (Pennings) Heusinkveld. Diena only lived in the Netherlands until she was four years old. They lived in the typical Dutch home with the living quarters in front and the threshing floor at the back. There was a lean-to added to the side of the house for the cattle. Her father kept bees and sold honey and wax, but his main occupation was making wooden shoes. Read More	Berendina was born in Varssevelt, Gelderland Province in the Netherlands, the daughter of Evert and Wilemina Johanna (Pennings) Heusinkveld. Diena only lived in the Netherlands until she was four years old. They lived in the typical Dutch home with the living quarters in front and the threshing floor at the back. There was a lean-to added to the side of the house for the cattle. Her father kept bees and sold honey and wax, but his main occupation was making wooden shoes. In 1855 her parents took their six children and traveled to New York taking five or six weeks, and from there they took the immigrant train to Milwaukee, WI staying with acquaintances. They went on to Alto, Fond du lac Co WI by horse and wagon. Diena lived there for the next 13 years until her family moved to Greenleafton, Fillmore Co. MN. She and Arend Vanderbeek were married the following year on December 3, 1869. Arend was a farmer and they first lived in a log house. The first four children were born there. Johanna, the youngest at that time, died in infancy. They sold that small 40 acre farm and bought 80 acres with a two story house on it. Three more children were born here. They were active in the Reformed Church where Arend was an elder and a Sunday School teacher. Nine of their children were baptized there. In 1887 Arend and Berendina decided to join other family members, sold their farm and moved to Pella, Lancaster Co NE. Here they had 200 acres that they broke up with ox teams and walking plows. They built a house plus farm buildings, and planted an orchard and shade trees. Four more children were born here, bringing the total to 13. Their children were - Della born 13 Oct 1870, died 10 Sep 1937 Edward born 29 Apr 1872, died 15 Oct 1941 Garret born 9 Dec 1873, died 14 Jan 1929 Johanna born 11 Apr 1875,died 24 Aug 1876 John born 22 May 1877, died 18 Aug 1954 Ella born 3 Apr 1879, died 17 May 1969 Gertie born 31 Jan 1881, died 20 Jun 1950 Hannah born 30 Nov 1882, died 13 Sep 1950 Minnie born 22 Oct 1884, died 3 Apr 1955 William Arthur born 15 Aug 1888, died 3 Jun 1948 Henry John born 10 Feb 1890, died 11 Mar 1969 Benjamin Franklin born 2 Oct 1892, died 4 Jan 1972 Jocoba born 13 May 1894, died 2 Jun 1971 Berendina became a diabetic later in life and after a number of years died in a diabetic coma.
