Description	:	Arend was born to Gerrit and Dirkje (Teman) Vanderbeek in a small house called "Het Spijker (which means "The Nail") in the southeast part of the village of Oldebroek. The house had been a convent for nuns and had a moat around it. Arend is my husband's Great Grandfather and when we visited Oldebroek, we went to this home. Up in the attic Arend Jan had scratched his initials on the window and also on the chimney. There was a hiding place there used during WWII to hide Jews. It held 8 people all... The house had been a convent for nuns and had a moat around it. Arend is my husband's Great Grandfather and when we visited Oldebroek, we went to this home. Up in the attic Arend Jan had scratched his initials on the window and also on the chimney. There was a hiding place there used during WWII to hide Jews. It held 8 people all standing quietly. Arend had 7 siblings, all who emigrated to the United States after the deaths of their parents except Annetje who died young. They were Gerritjen (Hattie), Garret, Hendrik (Henry), Geertjen, Aart born about 1844 died Nov 15, 1862 in a military hospital from pneumonia during the Civil War; Annetje, Jannetje (Jane). He was employed as a farm hand until shortly after the death of his Grandmother Geertjen Van Zwaluenburg Teman when the brothers and sisters who had not emigrated to the United States left the Netherlands for Alto Fond du lac WI. In 1868 he followed the Heusinkveld family to Greenleafton Fillmore MN where he and Berendina Hendrika (Diena) Heusinkveld were married on December 3, 1869. They bought 40 acres near Greenleafton with a small log house on it. Their first four children were born there. Then they built another home where three more children were born. They sold this farm and bought 80 acres where they had a house with an upstairs. Two more children were born there. They drove a team of oxen pulling a wagon to go to Greeleafton to the Reformed Church where all 9 children were baptized. Arend was an elder and a Sunday School teacher. Arend and Berendina sold their 80 acre farm in 1887 and joined his siblings who located to a Dutch community at Pella, Lancaster County, Nebraska. They bought 160 acres at this time, then later added 40 more to have 200 acres. This farm has been in the VanderBeek family up to the present time. Here four more children were born bringing the total to 13. The children were- Dillie (Della) born Oct 13, 1870 died Sep 10, 1937 in Prairie View, Phillips Co KS. married Pieter de Jong Jr Apr 6, 1892. (These were my husband's grandparents.) Edward born Apr 29, 1872 died Oct. 15, 1941. Garret born Dec 9, 1873 died Jan 14, 1929 married Bertha VanDiest Feb. 27, 1907. Johanna born Apr 11, 1875 died Aug 24, 1876. John born May 22, 1877 died Aug 18, 1954 married Theresa Loers in 1905. Ella born Apr 3, 1879 died May 17, 1969 married John deJongh Apr 22, 1904. Gertie born Jan 31, 1881 died Jun 20, 1950 married Bernard Jacobus (Ben) van Greuningen Mar 6, 1901. Hannah born Nov 30, 1882 died Sep 13, 1950. Minnie born Oct 22, 1884 died Apr 3, 1955 married Benjamin Obbink Feb 24, 1909. William Arthur born Aug 15, 1888 died Jun 3, 1948 married Jennie Beemink Apr 6. 1912. Henry John (Chief) born Feb 10, 1890 died Mar 11, 1969 married Ruth Pentico May 2, 1935. Benjamin Franklin (Frank) born Oct 2, 1892 died Jan 4, 1972 married Minnie Jeanette Hietbrink Feb 24, 1933. Jacoba born Jul 13, 1894 died Jun 2, 1971 married Roy DeRoe Apr 6, 1921.
