Description	:	Bernard Frederick Schroeder was born at Garnaville, Iowa August 1, 1856. He was the sixth child of Bernard F. And Anna Dorothy Mohrmann Schroeder. The children were Henry, John, Anna Marie, Elizabeth, Lucia, Bernard, Mahala, George, Martha, Christopher and Wilshire. With the exception of John, all grew to manhood or womanhood. Here he foundationed those qualities of character that made him... Read More	Bernard Frederick Schroeder was born at Garnaville, Iowa August 1, 1856. He was the sixth child of Bernard F. And Anna Dorothy Mohrmann Schroeder. The children were Henry, John, Anna Marie, Elizabeth, Lucia, Bernard, Mahala, George, Martha, Christopher and Wilshire. With the exception of John, all grew to manhood or womanhood. The early boyhood days were spent at Garnaville. Here he received his education. Here he gave his heart and life to Jesus Christ and was confirmed in the German Lutheran church in early years. Here he foundationed those qualities of character that made him a steadfast and loyal friend, neighbor and citizen. Even as a boy he was ever mindful of the welfare of others. He sought to do each day those things that would make the lives of others more happy and cheerful. Like the Christ, as a lad he was about the business of the Father. In the year 1884 Mr. Schroeder came to Emmetsburg. Here the partnership with his brother-in-law was formed, known since as the Beckman and Schroeder Implement business. For fifty-five years the firm has continued to serve the community, and holds an enviable record for its type of meeting the needs of its community. On October 4, 1886 he was united in marriage to Miss. Elizabeth Gill at Dubuque, Iowa. One daughter came to bless this union. Gretchen was born on August 10, 1887. From her parents and her home, she had caught the vision splendid of service and helpfulness. God had given her ability and desire to use her talents. She had finished high school and was in her first year at college at Mt. Vernon, Iowa when God spoke and she said, “Her am I, Lord.” This was January 1st 1908. This shock did not cause faith in God to waiver but instead to fix more and still more firmly on the things of eternity. A new sweetness of nature came, a new love for children was born, a new sympathy for those in need and enduring suffering and pain became daily more evident. Wherever he went, with whom ever he spoke, found life richer and Heaven nearer because he had passed that way. He lived always a friend to man. For nearly sixty years he had identified himself with the Methodist Episcopal church of this city. For 33 years he had been one of the ushers. He had served for years as a member of its board. His home, his church, his community, his friends, his God this was his world, and to them he gave all that he had. His only regret was that he did not have more to give. He lost his life in the lives of others. True to promise, he found it again and again. Every day was harvest. Every night came with the consciousness of work well done. Missed? Yes, sorely. But forgotten, never. Those of the immediate family who remain are, the beloved wife; sister, Mrs. John Beckman; brothers, Christopher and Wilshire, all of Emmetsburg, Iowa. Thus passes one of the old land-marks. The community shall miss him greatly. Silently and reverently all bow in tribute to the simple yet the great life which he lived.
