Thompson and M.O. Grodland. Burial was in the Evergreen cemetery with the Foy Funeral home in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Schroeder was born at Garnavillo Sept. 26, 1863, the tenth child of Bernard Frederick and Anna Dorothea Schroeder. His boyhood was spent in that city. He received his education and united with the German Lutheran church there. He came to Emmetsburg as a young man in 1886 and worked for a time in the implement business with his brother B. F. Schroeder, Jr. and a brother-in-law, Henry Beckman. Later he went to Des Moines where he was employed in the Beckman Brothers Foundry. A longing to be nearer his brothers and sisters and friends of former years brought him back to Emmetsburg in 1902. Here, for a few years, he farmed with this brother W. R. Schroeder and later was employed as a salesman and mechanic for the Dodge Automobile company. On Dec. 5, 1914, he was united in marriage with Martha Wells Dodgson in Algona. The couple established their home here. Mrs. Schroeder died in 1944 and Mr. Schroeder had since made his home with his sister-in-law, Mrs. W. R. Schroeder. Mr. Schroeder was a lover of nature, being interested in hunting and fishing and the protection of wild game. He served as game warden for this district for a number of years and was an active member of the Isaak Walton League. He also held memberships in the Masonic and Pythian lodges. He retired in 1935 and as the number of years in his full life increased you could never say Chris grew older because he didn’t change much in recent years…he devoted more and more of his time to hunting and fishing and overseeing the Schroeder farm in Freedom township. Endowed with a fine sense of humor which made him a large number of friends, Chris, as he was called by all who knew him, amazed many by continuing his very active life despite advanced years. He was an avid sports fan hardly ever missing a baseball, basketball or football game. On Nov. 15, while fishing at Ingham Lake, he had a heart attack and resulting complications brought death. After the attack he was taken to the local hospital for treatment. His condition improved after a few days and he was released to convalesce at the Mrs. W. R. Schroeder home. His condition took a turn for the worse Dec. 1 and he was returned to the hospital where the end came. He was preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters. He is survived by two nephews, H.W. Stratemeyer of Carroll and Bernard T. Schroeder of Ruthven; two nieces, Mrs. Gertrude Lockwood of Pomeroy and Mrs. R. H. Stratemeyer of Madelia, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Schroeder and Mrs. W.
