Free Press August 7, 1952 Bernard Raper, 68, of Anita, father of Noel Raper of Greenfield and Norwyn Raper of Fontanelle, passed away at 5 o'clock Thursday morning July 31st at Mercy hospital in Council Bluffs. He had been experiencing a decline in health since early spring and submitted to surgery July 18th in the hope of being restored to health. His condition was found to be beyond the aid of medical science, and he passed away thirteen days later. His age at the time of his death was 68 years, 7 month and 6 days. Bernard Raper was born December 25, 1883 to George and Cornelia Raper, of Prussia township, in Adair county. With exception of the time spent away from home while at school, and three years while he served as minister of the Friends Church at Carlisle, Iowa, he lived on the farm where he was born, until 1942 when he moved to Anita. He received his education at Penn College at Oskaloosa, Iowa and later attended the Friends Theological Seminary at Cleveland, Ohio. In May 1904 he was united in marriage with Miss Alice Aronson. They became the parents of two sons and a daughter, all of whom survive their parents. They are Noel of Greenfield, Norwyn of Fontanelle, and Mrs. Naomi Alloway of Cherokee, Iowa. Mrs. Raper passed away in April 1930, and one granddaughter, one grandson, and one great granddaughter also preceded him in death. On June 9, 1936 he married Mrs. Eva Ridenour, who with the three children, eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren survives him. During the introduction of R.E.A. he served on the Board of Directors in Adair County. He was much interested and very active in all civic and religious affairs. A devoted member of the Friends church at Canby, Iowa, he became active in the Congregational church in Anita, teaching a Sunday school class much of the time after moving to that place. He was a member of the Masonic Order and of the Eastern Star. He resigned as mayor of the town of Anita to accept a place on the Cass County Tax Board of Review. A member of the Greater Anita Club, he retired from its presidency only a few weeks ago. His kindly, sympathetic nature endeared him to all his neighbors and friends. His going is felt most keenly by his family and by a large circle of friends acquired during his lifetime. Last rites were held Sunday afternoon with a short prayer service at the home preceding the services held at 2 o'clock in the Congregational church in Anita. Rev. Derry conducted the service and Mrs. Beatrice Heckman sang "In the Garden" and "The Beautiful Garden of Prayer". Burial was in the cemetery at Canby with members of the Masonic order conducting ritualistic rites at the graveside.
