Raper, 77 years of age a resident of Adair County for 64 years, died at his home in Greenfield Monday morning, following a serious illness of several months duration. Heart disease was the cause of his death To review the life of Judge Raper, as he was affectionately known in Greenfield, because of his 24 years service as justice, is to review the up building of Adair county. When he first came to the county there were only a few scattered houses between Casey and Canby, where he first made his home. During his lifetime he saw men acquire their own farm homes and in the years of depression to lose these same homes which they had acquired through pioneering hardships. The same justice that he taught to members of his Good Fellowship Sunday school class over a period of 25 years, he exemplified as judge of the justice court here. Since he first set foot on Adair county soil he has been closely identified with the church, which he loved as one of his own, and whose religious laws he held sacred. It was this upright attitude that won him the profound respect of this community. The same hardy pioneer independence remained with him to the end. Even though critically ill he was loathe to burden others with his infirmities. George S. Raper was born at Aledo, Illinois, December 28, 1858, and passed away at his home in Greenfield December 29, 1935, at the age of 77 years and 1 day. At the age of 3 years he moved with his parents, John and Miriam (sic) Raper to Geneseo, Illinois. It was here that he attended school until the age of 13. In 1871 he came to Adair county, Iowa, where he herded cattle during the summer. The following year his parents came to Adair County and located on a farm one-half mile west of Canby. They were a pioneer family of that community. George returned to Geneseo to finish his education after which he returned to Adair County and taught in the schools here. He was married to Cornelia Speedling, October 14, 1880 and located on a farm ¾ mile south of Canby, where they resided until February 8, 1910, when they moved to Greenfield. His farm and the neighborhood of Canby have always held his interests. To this union two sons were born, Bernard, who survives his father, and Arthur who died in infancy. When a young man he accepted his Savior and in 1883 joined the Friends Church of Canby, where he was active in Sunday school and church work. After moving to Greenfield he attended the Methodist church. He taught the Good Fellowship Men's Bible Class for 25 years. He often spoke of this class as the inspiration which directed him to become a student of the Bible. In the summer of 1935, due to failing health, he was compelled to give up his work with the class, much to his regret. In the early summer of 1911 he was appointed justice of the peace for Greenfield, which office he held until the time of his death. He was vigorously active in the affairs of the community in which he lived. He was preceded in death by his wife in March 1930. He leaves to mourn his death, his son, Bernard, three grandchildren, Noel of Greenfield, Mrs. Naomi Alloway of Cherokee, and Norwyn of Fontanelle, four great grandchildren, one brother, Fred of Hanford, California. Three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Methodist church in Greenfield. The Reverend J.R. McNichols conducted the services. Members of the choir were: Misses Ethel Carl and Lillian Sissel, E.R. Gray and F.E. Rhodes with Mrs. G.O. Westby as accompanist. The selections sung were: "Shall We Gather At The River," and "Nearer My God To Thee." Members of the Good Fellowship Sunday school class who served as pallbearers were: H. Buchholz, Elmer Piper, A. Louk, O.P. Havens, Ed Carl and Winfred Crist. Interment took place in the Canby cemetery.
