She was one of two daughters born to Arthur and Ethel (Tope) Brown. She came to Montana in 1910 with her parents, who homesteaded in the Tunis area. She was one of two daughters born to Arthur and Ethel (Tope) Brown. She came to Montana in 1910 with her parents, who homesteaded in the Tunis area. Bernice was baptized in Fort Benton and received her formal education here. On Oct. 8, 1927 she married Francis C. Flatt. Bernice lived in the Carter community where she cooked for area farmers (mainly the Lenington farm). In 1945 she moved to Fort Benton and continued working in the restaurant business. In the years that followed she owned and operated Bernie's Cafe, managed Norm's Lanes and cooked at the hospital and most restaurants in town. In 1966 she began working at the Pioneer Mercantile, a job she held until her retirement in 1977. Bernice moved to the Sunrise Bluff Apartments in 1979. She lived there until Jan. of 1992, when failing health took her to the Chouteau County Nursing Home. Bernice died at the Missouri River Medical Center Sunday, Oct. 25, 1992. She was 84 years old. Bernice had been a lifelong member of the First Christian Church in Fort Benton. She had many hobbies over the years. She loved music and singing and played the piano by ear. Bernice enjoyed bowling and had been active in numerous leagues and tournaments. She was an avid spectator sports fan, especially when her children and grandchildren were involved. In her quiet hours at home Bernice liked to crochet and knit. She was an excellent cook and her family will remember her special candies and desserts. After she moved to Sunrise Bluffs she became active in Bingo, cards, puzzles and other activities there. Her survivors include a son, Glen Flatt of Malta; a son-in-law, Arnie Shupe, Deming, N.M.; 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Bernita Scott Shupe and a sister, Dorothy Engum. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Fort Benton. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery.
