Biography Included in the Manley Family Reunion Documents: August 3, 1988 BERNIECE MANLEY GRIFFIN, seventh child of David Stephen Manley and Isabella Barbara McNair Manley was born on March 29th, 1902 in Kirk, Colorado. She spent her school years there and worked in various homes in the area. Berniece then moved to California with an older sister and worked there as a housekeeper, cooking and caring for the children of her employer. Later Berniece returned to Kirk, Colorado where she met and married Melvin Griffin on August 10, 1924. Their first son, Donald Melvin was born in Kirk in 1925. They moved to California and worked on a dairy. Their first daughter, Evelyn Irene was born in California in 1927. From California they moved to Natoma, Kansas, Melvin’s home town. Berniece and Melvin worked hard to support their family in those hard years, being in the ice delivery business and farming. A second son, Samuel Lowell was born in Natoma in 1928. In 1930, Berniece and Melvin moved to a farm in the Laton Community, a few miles northwest of Natoma. At the Laton home three more children were born. A daughter, Barbara Ellen in 1930, a son, David Leroy in 1935 and a daughter Berneita Jean in 1941. Berniece always liked to raise a large vegetable garden and can and preserve a food supply for the family. During the 1940’s Melvin hauled oil and water from the new oil fields of Laton, Kansas. Most of Berniece and Melvin’s lives were spent on the farm that they both loved. In the early 1960’s, as the much deserved retirement years arrived, they purchased a home in Natoma. Melvin continued to drive to the county daily to check the crops and care for the livestock, as long as his health permitted. Melvin now in his 87th year, resides in a nursing home in Plainsville, Kansas. Berniece maintains her home, still loves to garden and enjoy her flowers. In the winter months she does a lot of needlework and plays the piano. Their grandchildren and great-grandchildren are their greatest joy. George Melvin Griffin, beloved husband and father,passed away on August 14, 1989. Berniece Manley Griffin, beloved wife and mother, passed away on February 2, 1992. They are buried in the Natoma Lutheran Cemetery in Natoma, Osborne County, Kansas.
